Dundee United 3-0 Dundee – Match Report

Dundee United comfortably beat their next door neighbours, courtesy of goals from the full-backs. In the opening seconds, Agyei had a shot from range, but his ambitious effort went well past the post. 90 seconds in, Dhanda’s backwards header went into the path of Sapsford, but his effort was tame and was easily saved by McCracken. On 14 minutes, the hosts hit the front. Ferry found Sapsford, whose deflected effort hit off Ferry’s knee and found the bottom corner. Graham nearly levelled just past the 20-minute mark. The defender’s lofted volley looked goal bound, but Iovu managed to get to the ball and head over. Jim Goodwin’s side nearly doubled their advantage. Farrugia’s low effort towards the centre of the goal was saved onto the post by McCracken. On 35 minutes, the visitors thought they levelled things up. Dhanda’s in swinging corner was won by Graham, who forced Richards into a top save, but Westley, who showed desire, got to the ball first and headed home. However, after review, the goal was disallowed for a foul committed by Astley, who pulled Graham’s shirt when the ball was coming in. Into stoppage time at the end of the first period, Hamilton had a shot from range, which was comfortably saved by Richards. HT: Dundee United 1-0 Dundee Into the second period, Sevelj won a header ahead of McCracken from a corner, but the midfielder headed over. With 20 minutes of normal time remaining, Ferry scored again to double United’s lead. The full-back took one touch to get the ball out his feet and found the net via the post. Minutes later, things got even better for United. Ferry did brilliantly to work space for a cross, and found his fellow full-back Strain, who headed into the bottom corner. After 3 minutes of additional time, the referee brought the derby to a close. Arsenal 1-0 Newcastle: Post-Match Reaction

Arsenal go back top with narrow win against Newcastle. Mikel Arteta on the importance of the win: “I’m really happy for the win. We talked about game one and how important that was. We did the job. We should have finished with a bigger margin in certain moments of the game, but when it’s 1-0 it’s always tough because they have quality, because they brought so many good players on the bench as well. And when we don’t finish the action, especially the open ones that we had, the margin is going to be smaller.” On the decision to not send off Nick Pope: “They will have their opinion, I’m here to give my opinion and somebody that has been in the game for a long time, and you talk to any of the players, because the trajectory where the ball is, there’s no keeper there. If that were to happen the other way around, it’s a red card.” On Eberechi Eze: “Eze is a big player for us and he’s in a really good moment. He produced an incredible moment to score the goal. Hopefully he’s fit and he can be with us on Wednesday.” On Kai Havertz’s injury: “He had a little niggle, so I don’t know how serious it is. It didn’t look too big because the action, the way he describes it, is not too sharp, but I have to wait and see.” On the return of Bukayo Saka: “Great. I think he had a very good impact as well in the minutes that he’s played. He’s back, I think he looks sharp, he looks good, he looks fresh. You certainly notice something different in the team and in the stadium as well when he comes in, so we certainly need that. “Let’s see how he reacts tomorrow, how he absorbs the load. He’s so keen, he’s so motivated, it’s the most beautiful part of the season, and he’s with us.” Eberechi Eze: “I don’t hear pundits! The pressure we put on ourselves is so much more than what’s coming from outside. “It’s the necessary pressure to win, it’s not negative, it’s beautiful.” On his injury: “I’m all good, I have no serious injury.” Declan Rice on a ‘massive’ three points: “The three points were massive today. After the week we had against Manchester City, there was a lot of encouragement to take from that game, but we knew coming into this, with five games left, we have to win all five. “To tick that one off today was a real boost, so we’re really, really happy with the win today.” On the difficulty of playing Newcastle: “Always against Newcastle, it will be a really tough game, they have unbelievable players who can hurt you at any time. “We could have done better in front of goal in the second half, it opened up for us, and it was just lacking that final pass. But in the end, three points, a special goal from Ebs and that makes the weekend better, so it is all good.”
St Johnstone 2-0 Raith Rovers – Match Report

St Johnstone beat Raith Rovers on trophy presentation day. The first real chance of the game occurred just under 5 minutes in. Raith Rovers only managed to clear a corner into the path of Gullan, who blazed over from just outside the box. Minutes later, Fotheringham found space for a shot outside the box, but the Saints number 21 dragged his effort past the post. The Perth side won a free kick in a promising position, which was headed out for a corner by Rowe. From the resulting corner, Fotheringham volleyed over the top. Raith Rovers nearly took the lead. Cameron found himself free in the box but headed over. Fotheringham won a free kick just outside the box, which was struck well by Gullan, whose effort was denied by a brilliant piece of goalkeeping from former St Johnstone goalkeeper Rae. Fotheringham was then brought down in the area by Matthews, and without hesitation, the referee pointed to the penalty spot. Gullan then stepped up, and tucked the penalty away, to give the champions a deserved lead based on the balance of play. Stanton played a ball into the box after managing to find a yard of space, which found Fotheringham, who struck his volley past the post. McPake’s deflected right footed effort hit the side netting. Fowler won a free kick on the edge of the area, which was struck by Gullan, who found the corner to give Simo Valakari’s side a deserved 2-0 lead just before the break. St Johnstone vs Raith Rovers – Match Preview

Champions St Johnstone host Raith Rovers on trophy presentation day. Raith Rovers have failed to find the net against the Champions in the Championship in their 3 attempts this season. St Johnstone came out with 3 points in the first league meeting between the sides, winning 2-0 on the road. The sides have met twice after that, with both games finishing goalless. Raith Rovers’ last win against Friday night’s opponents came back in 2004, in a 1-0 win. Their last win at McDiarmid Park came in September 2003, in another 1-0 win. St Johnstone come into this fixture off the back of a 2-0 win away from home against Dunfermline Athletic, which saw them become champions. The Perth outfit are unbeaten in their last 12 Championship matches, winning 7 and drawing 5. Raith Rovers come into this meeting off the back of a 2-1 defeat away from home against Arbroath, which ended a run of 4 consecutive wins. The maximum number of points that St Johnstone can reach is 77, no side has reached that figure in the Championship since Rangers won the title in 2015/16, when they finished on 81 points. Although still within reach, the play offs look increasingly unlikely for Raith Rovers. Dougie Imrie’s side currently sit 5th, 5 points behind Dunfermline in 4th, who play Queen’s Park away from home, before rounding off the league season at home against Arbroath. Josh McPake will play his final game for St Johnstone at McDiarmid Park on Friday night. The winger, who will join Hearts in the summer, joined the Saints on a free transfer in June 2024. The forward has enjoyed an impressive campaign with St Johnstone thus far, scoring 16 goals in the league, which sees him lead the way in the top scoring charts – 3 ahead of Dunfermline’s Tod. Keeper Toby Steward, who has kept 18 league clean sheets so far, summed up his loan spell after securing the title on Tuesday night against Dunfermline Athletic: “My family have come up loads and they have absolutely loved it. They have new friends now, both supporters and people from around the club. “From day one, we had a goal. That was to make something happen and go up. For the fans and everyone connected with the club, I’m so happy we could do it. “The boys are all amazing. A great group. And obviously great players. They are friends for life now. I’ll never forget this. Just fantastic. It’s been class. Absolutely loved it.” Raith Rovers sit 2nd when it comes to clean sheets. The Fife outfit have kept 15 clean sheets in the league, 2 more than their city rivals Dunfermline Athletic. Simo Valakari on the difficulty of the Championship: “It is a difficult league because you play every week and every opponent is at you. They’re kicking, they’re pushing you, so to do this our way, it’s unbelievable. I’m so proud of everyone. “It’s not easy with how much I have demanded from them. We have been in numerous Sundays when everyone else is sleeping in their beds. We have been training on Sundays after the Saturday. “We have been working, we have had many things (to deal with), but the players, they wanted this. That was the biggest thing. All of these players wanted to be here. They want our club to be successful.” On Friday night: “The fans have been by our side all season, now we can all look forward to a great day at McDiarmid Park on Friday. Let’s make it a carnival, let’s make it full rock and roll.”

Jim Goodwin’s men found themselves 2-0 up going into the last few minutes of injury time, but a goal from Hay and an own goal from Graham gave Dundee a point. The away side won the other two derbies this season. United won the opening derby of the season 2-0 at Dens Park and Dundee beat United 1-0 at Tannadice. Dundee then face St Mirren at Dens Park, which could prove to be a massive clash in the survival race. Dundee currently sit two points above St Mirren, who sit in 10th place. In the second meeting, Dundee won 3-1 at Dens Park, and in the third meeting, which took place in Paisly, the game finished goalless. Dundee then face Livingston at Dens Park, who sit bottom of the league, but have improved since Bartley took charge. There has been very little to separate these sides in their three meetings this season. Dundee won the first meeting 3-2 at Dens Park, courtesy of a 97th minute penalty. The other two meetings finished 2-2, with Dundee going 2-0 up in both matches. Dundee then face Kilmarnock at Rugby Park under the lights. These sides, who will face each other this weekend in the final game week before the split, have met three times this campaign. The first meeting, at Rugby Park, finished goalless. In the second meeting, Steven Pressley’s men came from behind to win 2-1 at Dens Park. These sides also met in the Scottish Cup 4th Round at Rugby Park, where Dundee came from behind once again to win 2-1, against nine-man Kilmarnock. Dundee round off the season with what could prove to be a massive game against Aberdeen at Dens Park. Aberdeen currently sit three points above Kilmarnock. The first meeting between these sides ended 4-0 to Aberdeen. In the first meeting between these sides at Dens Park, Aberdeen won 3-1. Aouchiche, who scored in the 4-0 win and bagged a brace in the 3-1 win at Dens Park, departed Aberdeen in February. And in the most recent meeting, at Pittodrie, Dundee recorded their first win at Pittodrie since 2004, winning 3-2.
PSG vs Liverpool – Match Preview

PSG host an out of form Liverpool in the first leg of this Champions League Last 8 tie. These sides were drawn in the same group in the 2018/19 Champions League. In the first meeting, which took place at Anfield, Liverpool won 3-2, courtesy of a stoppage time strike from Brazilian forward Firmino. In the return fixture, PSG ran out 2-1 winners, with the goals coming from Bernat and Neymar. These sides also met in the Last 16 of the Champions League last season. Despite getting outplayed throughout, Liverpool won the first leg 1-0 in Paris, courtesy of a late strike from Elliot, and a stellar display from Alisson. In the second leg, PSG won 1-0 after 120 minutes, courtesy of an early strike from Ballon d’Or winner Dembele, which sent the tie to penalties, where the French outfit ran out 4-1 winners, courtesy of heroics from current Manchester City goalkeeper Donnarumma. The reigning Champions of Europe did not have a successful group phase, finishing outside of the automatic knockout places. As a result, PSG had to face fellow French side AS Monaco over two legs for a spot in the Last 16. The French champions overturned a two-goal deficit to win the first leg 3-2 away from home against 10 men. In the second leg, Monaco hit the front just before half time to level the tie, but once again, Monaco got a man sent off, and PSG capitalised, scoring two quickfire goals. Teze levelled the tie on the night in injury time, but it proved to be just a consolation. Luis Enrique’s men were drawn Chelsea in the Last 16, where they comfortably progressed, winning 8-2 across the two legs. Liverpool had a solid Champions League, league phase, finishing third, only behind Bayern Munchen and Arsenal. Arne Slot’s men faced Turkish outfit Galatasaray in the Last 16. In Turkey, Liverpool lost 1-0, courtesy of an early strike from Lemina. However, in the second leg, Liverpool turned the deficit around, winning 4-0 in Merseyside, courtesy of goals from Szoboszlai, Ekitike, Gravenberch and Salah, to set up a meeting with PSG in the Last 8. PSG come into this fixture off the back of back-to-back league wins, against Nice and Toulouse, and in their last four matches in all competitions, the French outfit have found the net fifteen times. On the other hand, Liverpool come into this fixture off the back of back-to-back defeats against Brighton in the Premier League and a 4-0 defeat against Manchester City in the FA Cup in their last outing. France World Cup winner Christophe Dugarry believes that PSG will “wrap up” the quarter-final in the first leg in Paris: “It’s going to be a walk in the park, honestly. Liverpool are disastrous. Fourteen wins, ten losses, and seven draws since the start of the season in the league. They’re catastrophic. “I’m not going to say they have bad players, but they don’t play together. “In my opinion, the difference in level is colossal. I think PSG will wrap up the quarter-final in the first leg.” “They have no legs, they have nothing. Technically they have good players, they’re not clumsy, but they play at a snail’s pace. “When you see the intensity Paris Saint-Germain manages to bring today, with their legs back, with their mental strength and everything else they’ve regained…there’s no comparison between the two teams. “It’s going to be a massacre! It’s going to be a massacre.”
Sporting Lisbon vs Arsenal – Match Preview

Arsenal return to Champions League action on Tuesday, looking to bounce back from back-to-back cup defeats. These two sides have met three times in the past three years. The first of those three came in a 2-2 draw in Lisbon in the first leg of the Last 16 of the Europa League. In the return leg in N5, Sporting Lisbon progressed on penalties after a 1-1 draw after 120 minutes. And the most recent meeting between these sides came in November 2024, when Arsenal won 5-1 in Lisbon. Sporting Lisbon enjoyed an impressive Champions League, league phase, finishing within the top 8, above the likes of Manchester City, Real Madrid and reigning champions Paris Saint-Germain. This match will be far from easy for the Gunners, as in the last 16, the Portuguese outfit overturned a 3-0 first leg deficit against Norwegian side Bodo Glimt. Rui Borges’ side won 3-0 after 90 minutes, which sent the tie into extra time, where goals from Araujo and Nel sent Sporting through, to set up a Last 8 meeting with Arsenal. Arsenal are yet to lose in this season’s Champions League. The Gunners won all 8 of their league phase matches which resulted in a 1st place finish. Mikel Arteta’s men were then drawn against Bayer Leverkusen in the Last 16, where they won 3-1 across the two legs, drawing 1-1 in Germany, then winning 2-0 in England. Sporting Lisbon come into this first leg clash off the back of back-to-back league wins against Alverca and Santa Clara, and in their last three matches in all competitions, they have found the net thirteen times, while Arsenal come into this meeting off the back of back-to-back cup defeats against Manchester City in the League Cup Final, then against Southampton in the FA Cup. Sporting Lisbon will be without their captain Morten Hjulmand for Tuesday’s first leg through suspension. Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta confirmed that Jurrien Timber and Bukayo Saka will not be available for Arsenal in Lisbon, however, Declan Rice, Leandro Trossard and Gabriel will all be available for selection. Viktor Gyokeres scored an impressive 97 times for Sporting Lisbon in only 102 appearances, and manager Rui Borges hopes that the Swede will receive a positive reception from the Sporting faithful when he returns to Lisbon on Tuesday: “He is a great player, and I am sure he will be welcomed by everyone because he marked the history of Sporting, and he deserves this acknowledgement. “I always try to be balanced, and I try to understand everyone. He had the ambition, and after talking to the management, they came to an understanding so ultimately everything that happened was correct for both sides; both Sporting and the player got what they wanted. He wanted to take that step in his career and we respect that. “Players will change, but the club stays the same, and Sporting will go on winning. I wish him (Gyokeres) all the best and I am sure he will be very welcome here because the admiration we have for him is great.” Rui Borges on Arsenal: “It is a great team, and great teams always want to win. They want to be in all competitions. “They will be like a wounded beast tomorrow. They will be more focused, more willing to show their collective and individual capacity. “Frankly, I think it will make things more difficult for us the fact that they have not had the best two last matches. But Arsenal will be facing a very motivated team. We believe we can do something extraordinary tomorrow, something that has never been done by Sporting.” Mikel Arteta on Sporting Lisbon: “Before we played them as well, when you look at what they’ve done, especially at home, the way they have behaved in this Champions League, the teams that they have beaten, we know the difficulty of the match. That’s why we want it even more.”
Arsenal 2-0 (3-1) Bayer Leverkusen: Post-match reaction

Post-match reaction from Arsenal’s win against Bayer Leverkusen, which sees Mikel Arteta’s men progress through to the Last 8 of the Champions League. Mikel Arteta on Eze’s special strike opening up the tie: “Yes, I think it’s true, I think we started the game so well. We were a threat from every angle, their ‘keeper maintained them in the game I think, and we needed a magical moment from Ebs to score a wonderful goal, a wonderful strike, to give us the lead. In the second half we had periods of domination, periods where they dominated as well because they are a really good side, and they are really good in what they do. And again, Declan’s actions opened the opportunity to go on and win the game and the tie, and unfortunately as well we had four or five situations where we should have probably scored the third one and put the game to bed. But overall, I think we fully deserve to be in the quarter-finals.” On Declan Rice’s display: “He was immense. Him and the whole team – I just mentioned the soul of the team, I think the manner that they go for every ball, the passion that they show and the reaction is remarkable. Doing it every three days at that level is so difficult.” On David Raya’s crucial saves: “I don’t know what they generated, again in two games it was a set-piece last time and then a header before that, and today an action. He makes an incredible save, that’s why he’s here, he’s absolutely amazing.” Leandro Trossard:“It was a good performance from us, especially how we dominated that first half with a lot of chances. “I think we enjoyed ourselves]a lot on the pitch today, you could see that, it transmitted on to the crowd as well, I think we were very good and it was a perfect one for us. “We just needed to get the business done and I think we did it in a very good way.” Eberechi Eze on his goal: “I don’t know if I could dream of scoring a goal like that! I just saw the opportunity to shoot & thankful to God it worked today. It’s a special goal, I’m going to remember it for a long time.” On the season run-in: “The clear aim is to win trophies… it’s what we want to do, it’s what we’ve had as our goal from the start”. We’re in the final stages of all competitions, we’ll keep pushing, working. God willing, it comes through.” Declan Rice: “I’m shattered. It’s non stop. We are obviously still in all competitions. It’s been every 3 days since October. We’ve been coping with it best we can. You find energy and ways to win on nights like this.”
Dundee vs Dundee United – Match Preview

Dundee welcome rivals Dundee United to Dens Park, for the 3rd Dundee Derby of the season. The away side have won the previous 2 derbies this season. In the most recent meeting, Dundee beat United 1-0 at Tannadice, with Hay’s goal right at the end of the first period the difference between the sides. In the first meeting of the season, Jim Goodwin’s side won 2-0, with the goals coming from Sapsford and Dolcek. Dundee come into the derby off the back of an impressive 2-1 win against high-flying Motherwell. Steven Pressley’s side are unbeaten in their last 4 games, which included a first win at Pittodrie since 2004 and a 95th minute equaliser against Hibernian after McGrath thought he won it when he found the net on 89 minutes. On the other hand, United come into the Derby off the back of a 2-1 defeat against Falkirk, which saw their Scottish Cup hopes come to an end. The Terrors have only won 1 of their last 5 matches, with that 1 win coming against St Mirren at Tannadice. Dundee have a respectable home league record. The Dens Park outfit have won 6, drawn 3 and lost 5 of their 14 home league games. However, they have beaten Celtic, who they play at home on April 5th, beaten Falkirk and beaten Motherwell at Dens Park. Dundee United have not been great on the road this campaign. The Tangerines have won 3, drawn 6 and lost 5 of their 14 away matches in the league, however, 1 of those wins did come against Dundee. Steven Pressley’s reaction to win against Motherwell: “We set up in a certain way, Motherwell adapted, tested us but time and time again the players found solutions. At times we showed good bravery. It’s small steps from us in the right direction, that’s now seven points from our last nine against Aberdeen, Motherwell and Hibernian which is a good return but the most pleasing thing for me is that we’re making progress and the players are showing a lot of personality and a lot of character. “Motherwell had a lot of pressure, a lot of efforts on goal and made it really difficult for us but time and time again the players came up with the answers and defended for their lives. “I think for that effort alone it’s really pleasing for them to get the rewards with the win.” On Jon McCracken: “Jon McCracken has been terrific for us all season. There’s been a couple of moments of late but he’s responded brilliantly to that. There hasn’t been that many, and also we have to remember it’s his first real run of games at this level. he’s played more games this season than in any other season so he’s learning all the time, growing all the time.” Jim Goodwin’ reaction to defeat against Falkirk: “I don’t want to be making any excuses but we’ve had nine games in five weeks and we could have done without the St Mirren game three days before a Firday night game. Add to that we’ve had key players suspended but it’s a really disappointing outcome but you can’t afford to start like we did. “We wont allow the season to peter out. We have a big job to close the gap on Falkirk but we’ll not give up on that.”
Bayer Leverkusen vs Arsenal – Match Preview

Arsenal return to Champions League action on Wednesday, in the first leg of the last 16, looking to continue their perfect start to their European campaign. The last meeting between these sides came in a friendly at Emirates Stadium ahead of the 2024/25 campaign, where Arsenal won 4-1 courtesy of goals from Zinchenko, Trossard, Jesus and Havertz. The last meeting between these sides in the Champions League came back in the 2001/02 season where Arsenal also won 4-1. Pires, Henry, Vieira and Bergkamp got the goals. The German outfit finished 16th in the league phase, winning 3, drawing 3 and losing 2, which as a result, meant they had to go through a 2-legged play-off against Greek side Olympiacos, where they won 2-0 across 2 legs to set up a last 16 meeting against Mikel Arteta’s men. Arsenal enjoyed a perfect league phase, winning 8 of their 8 matches. In that run, the Gunners beat Serie A leaders Inter Milan 3-1 in Italy, Spanish side Atletico Madrid 4-0 in N5 and Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich at home. Kasper Hjulmand’s side sit 6th in the Bundesliga, 3 points behind RB Leipzig in 5th and 9 ahead of Frankfurt in 7th, winning 13, drawing 5 and losing 7 of their 25 matches. Die Werkself have only conceded 4 goals in their last 7 Bundesliga matches and have only lost 1 of their last 7 league games. The Gunners have not lost in their last 11 matches and are League Cup finalists, where they will face Man City, sit 7 points clear at the top of the Premier League and beat League One Outfit Mansfield Town on Saturday to qualify into the last 8 of the FA Cup. In their last outing against Mansfield Town, the North London outfit became the first Premier League side to reach 100 goals in all competitions this campaign. Mikel Arteta on the win against Mansfield: “Because of the pitch, they have to adapt as well. Because of the energy that the supporters put in, which I think was extraordinary. The intensity, the banter at times, the interactions and the belief that they put in towards the team. “And then, because you really have to earn it. We had moments where it should have been two or three [up] when you don’t close the games and they have hope and belief. That becomes more and more dangerous and after they equalise in the game, you really have to dig in to earn the right to win it.” On Max Dowman’s performance against Mansfield: “Well, I’m very proud of him, very proud as well of Marli, obviously, two 16-year-olds, starting in the FA Cup. That tells us a lot about them, their personality and the quality that they have. And Max, yeah I think he was exceptional.” Kasper Hjulmand ahead of Wednesday’s meeting with Arsenal: “Because of a German team and perhaps playing Bayern four times, Arsenal would be better for a bit of variety. “They are the best teams in Europe. We want to play against the best and are looking forward to this big challenge.”
