Ex-Hibs striker loved by Jose Mourinho, Antonio Conte and Ange Postecoglu joins League One side

Dane Scarlett has completed a permanent transfer to Leyton Orient for an undisclosed fee.  The forward spent last season on loan at Hibs, but failed to impress as a late winner at Ibrox was his only goal in 13 appearances in green and white. Despite being highly rated by many ex-Tottenham managers, it’s clear the Englishman wasn’t in Roberto De Zerbi’s plans in North London. During a 2021 interview when in charge of Spurs, Jose Mourinho said: ““He is a diamond – a kid with incredible potential. “He is still 16, 17 soon, and I believe next season he will be a first-team squad player because he has a lot of talent. “I just want to say that he will be 17 next month, and I want him to be part of the first-team squad next season. “So this season he is there and here, goes to training sessions with us and matches with the kids of his age and trains there. “Next season he has to be a first-team player. Immense talent. Very good physical development.” Jose Mourinho was replaced in North London by ex-Chelsea, Italy and Juventus manager Antonio Conte, who was also full of praise for Scarlett. In 2022, he said: “I think that Dane Is working very hard and he is a really good prospect from the academy. For sure in this moment he is the best prospect from the academy.” Prior to joining Ipswich on loan in 2023, then Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglu said: “He has been really good for us in training, he’s working really hard. “Look, I’ll sit down with Dane over the next couple of days and sort of chart a way forward for him. I really think he’s definitely got a future at our club and I really like his attributes as a striker. “I’ll make that decision over the next couple of days and sit down with him, but I certainly see him as a Tottenham player and a lot of that will depend on what else happens over the next two or three days.” After completing a move across London to League One side, Scarlett said: “I’m very happy to be here and I can’t wait to get started. “I want to play and help contribute with goals. It’s my first permanent deal and I’m excited to get the next chapter of my career going.” Still only 22, Scarlett will now aim to get his career up-and-running in England’s third tier, looking to prove why so many top name managers were fans of his.

Scott McTominay to miss September internationals

It has been announced that Scotland star-man Scott McTominay will miss Sebastien Pocognolis first Scotland camp as the midfielder is preparing to undergo heart surgery. McTominay started Napoli’s 2-1 loss to Como at the weekend, but was replaced by Kevin De Bruyne before the hour mark. Luckily, the procedure is only said to be a minor one, with Napoli expecting McTominay to return after the international break, meaning he should be available for November’s international camp. Sebastien Pocognoli takes charge of his first Scotland match away to Slovenia in just over three weeks. Whilst McTominay won’t be in the Belgian’s first squad, it’s expected that the team to begin the UEFA Nations League Campaign will be announced in the coming weeks.

Celtic add Danish midfielder to the ranks

Celtic have completed the loan signing of Danish midfielder Oliver Sørensen from Parma. Sørensen becomes Celtic’s fifth signing of the summer following the arrivals of Mika Baur, Haissem Hassan, Kasper Høgh and Camilo Duran. The midfielder joined Italian side Parma last year, but previously played for FC Midtyjlland in Denmark, where he won the league title in 2024. After completing his move to the champions, Sørensen said: “I feel lucky to be a part of this club now, and I hope the style of play can suit me. “It’s attacking football. They want to attack and they want to go forward. They want to push the opposing team down in their box. So, I hope I can contribute and help the team to do that. “I love to attack, I love to run, I love to defend and I love to tackle, so I’m ready to give 100 per cent, and I can’t wait to be at Celtic Park for the first time.” After completing the signing, Celtic manager Martin O’Neill said: “Oliver is someone with really good experience, playing at a high level in both Italy and Denmark. “He has great energy, he is able to move really well up and down the pitch with strength and can play in a number of positions across the midfield. “We are looking forward to working with him and think he can be an important player for us.” Sørensen could look to make his debut tomorrow night as Celtic host Aberdeen.

Reo Hatate departs Celtic for Championship

Celtic midfielder Reo Hatate has completed a switch to EFL Championship side Burnley, signing a three-year-deal on an undisclosed fee.  Hatate made 191 appearances during four-and-a-half years at Celtic, winning five Scottish Premierships, three Scottish Cups and two League Cups, scoring 33 goals in the process. The midfielder was part of Ange Postecoglu’s Celtic rebuild, arriving during the 2021/22 season alongside fellow Japanese players Kyoto Furuhasi and Daizen Maeda. However, the midfielder’s game time dwindled under Martin O’Neill and whilst he still featured regularly, was not as an integral piece to the Celtic puzzle as before. Upon completing a move to Burnley, Hatate said: “I’m hoping to bring my experience and knowledge to the dressing room and help the team on the pitch as much as possible to achieve our aim.” The move comes after Celtic announced the signing of midfielder Oliver Sorensen on loan from Parma earlier today.

Enzo Fernandez completes Manchester City move

Manchester City have completed the signing of Enzo Fernandez from Chelsea on a five-year-deal.  The fee is rumoured to be in the region of £124,000,000, a significant profit on the already nine-figure fee Chelsea spent to bring him to the club from Benfica three-and-a-half years ago.  In accumulative transfer fees, Fernandez is now the third most expensive footballer ever, behind Romelu Lukaku and Neymar. It became clear that he wanted to leave the club this summer, but prior to forcing a move away from the club, Fernandez was a fan favourite at Chelsea, especially under current Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca, whom he’s reunited with. Upon completing his move to Manchester, Fernandez said: “Manchester City are the most successful club in England in recent times. “Every player wants to be part of a club like this because everyone knows how well-run City are. “I could not be happier to be here, and I am ready for the challenge of helping City continue winning trophies. This is a club built for success. “If you look across the squad, City have quality in every area. I want to learn from my new teammates and become a better player. “I pride myself on continually improving my game. Anyone who’s worked with me will know how hard I train every single day and how much I put into matches. I give absolutely everything and I can promise Manchester City that will continue now I’m here. ” Fernandez joined Chelsea in January 2023 on the back of winning the World Cup with Argentina. He played 170 games for the West London club, scoring 31 goals in that time frame. The midfielder won the Conference League and Club World Cup whilst at Chelsea. The former Chelsea midfielder could make his Manchester City debut on Saturday, where they host ex-Chelsea and Manchester City midfielder Frank Lampard’s Coventry City side.

Nathan Patterson set to become the next Scot playing in Serie A

Per Fabrizio Romano, Everton right-back Nathan Patterson is set to join Torino on a permanent deal.  Patterson came through the Rangers academy, breaking into the first team during the league winning campaign of 2020/21. He’d then join Everton in January 2022 in a deal believed to be worth over £10,000,000. The Scotsman has struggled with injuries during his four-and-a-half years at Everton, only making 68 appearances for the club in that time span. The 24-year-old has been capped 29 times so far for Scotland and played in all three of this summer’s World Cup games, starting the latter two against Morocco and Brazil. A big talking point of Everton’s transfer window has been the hunt for a right-back following Seamus Coleman’s departure, but it seems they’re about to let another one go as Patterson heads to Turin to join Ché Adams. Should the move go through, he will become the eighth member of the Scotland National Team plying their trade in Italy.

Motherwell bring Dylan Levitt back to Scotland

Motherwell have announced the signing of Dylan Levitt from Leyton Orient on a two-year-deal for an undisclosed fee. A product of the Manchester United academy, Levitt first moved to Scotland in 2021 on loan to Dundee United before making that move permanent a year later. The club’s relegation in 2023 opened the door for the Welsh international to move to Hibernian, where he spent two-and-a-half years in the capital. He’d then fall down the pecking order amongst David Gray’s midfielders last season, allowing him to move to Leyton Orient in League One, where he spent six months. After putting pen-to-paper in Lanarkshire, Levitt said: “I feel like I should be able to slot in here quickly and easily. From the games I’ve watched this season, this is the perfect system for me to play in. There are some really good players in the building, and now it’s my job to get to work and try to push into the team. “I’m well accustomed to Scottish football and know what it takes to be successful here. I’m looking forward to what comes next.” Motherwell manager Alfred Johansson pointed at Levitt’s ability and Premiership experience after completing his 11th signing of the summer, he said: “We have recruited from leagues across the globe this summer, but bringing someone in who has ample experience in this division is also really important. Dylan has played almost 100 games in the Scottish Premiership, so he knows exactly what’s needed. “His ability on the ball and characteristics were exactly what we wanted, and we feel he bolsters our options in the middle of the pitch. We have some really strong players in this position who will all be pushing each other on throughout the season. “I’m excited to see Dylan in our system and feel our summer recruitment has put the squad in a really healthy position.” Levitt could look to make his Motherwell debut soon as they host one of his former clubs Dundee United tomorrow in the Scottish Premiership, before going away to Rangers on Saturday.

Premier League transfer merry-go-round as winger dictates moves across the country and out-of-favour Chelsea trio set to depart

It is understood that Mykhailo Mudryk is set to join Tottenham Hotspur on loan, with Tosin Adarabioyo set to make the same move permanently. Robert Sanchez is also Como bound, per Fabrizio Romano. Iliman Ndiaye also looks to be on the way from Everton to Manchester City, which could dictate transfers elsewhere in the league.  Mudryk, who cost Chelsea £89,000,000, has not played for the club since November 2024 as the Ukranian tested positive for doping and was handed a 4-year-ban, losing his #10 shirt to Cole Palmer in the process. The ban was overturned in July after his appeal ruled he did NOT dope. It however seems he’s not in Xabi Alonso’s Chelsea plans as he’s yet to play a competitive match since his return with Alonso’s front three of Cole Palmer, Morgan Rogers and Joao Pedro appearing nailed down. The winger was previously linked with a loan move to Leeds United, but it now seems his destination will be across London with Roberto De Zerbi’s Tottenham Hotspur. It’s been a busy window for Spurs, who initially looked to add Everton’s Iliman Ndiaye to their wide options, but it’s said that Manchester City have hijacked the move with their deal to bring Liverpool’s Cody Gakpo seemingly falling through, thus forcing Tottenham’s hand to offer Mudryk more game time during his comeback season. A move for Ndiaye could cause a transfer domino effect in the Premier League. It was rumoured that Richarlison would become a bargaining chip in the deal should Ndiaye have moved to Spurs, with the Brazilian being keen to return to Merseyside. Despite not wanting to be used in a swap deal, he said: “After everything I’ve been through in the last few years, I’ve decided that never again will anyone decide my future for me. “If they reach an agreement between Spurs and Everton, I will return to my beloved club. “My intention was to go back to the place where I was very happy, yes, but the negotiations happened only in the way certain people wanted, and it will no longer be like that. “Despite all this turmoil, I am under contract at Spurs and will remain at the club’s disposal.” Prior to the transfer hijacking, Manchester City were previously linked with Ndiaye as Jack Grealish was rumoured to go the other way after impressing at Everton before injury last season. Whilst he’s not said to be involved in this deal as Enzo Maresca’s side are rumoured to pay a £65,000,000 fee for the winger. It’s also understood Everon have begun pushing to bring Grealish back to the club in a separate deal. Ndiaye’s move to Manchester now comes after their proposed transfer of Cody Gakpo collapsed. The Dutchman was set to join Manchester City, but rumours suggest Liverpool failed to agree fees for Brighton’s Yakuba Minteh and Crystal Palace’s Ismailia Sarr, leading to them opting to hold on to Gakpo. Liverpool announced the signing of Bradley Barcola from PSG in a £123,000,000 deal yesterday, but would look for their third winger of the summer should Gakpo leave. Tosin Adarabioyo has also been out-of-favour in West London as Xabi Alonso looks to trim an incredibly bloated squad. Roberto De Zerbi revealed that centre-back Kevin Danso has asked to leave the club, so it is expected that Adarabioyo could be the replacement that allows Danso to move on. The Englishman is a product of Manchester City’s academy and moved across West London from Fulham to Chelsea two years ago. Finally, goalkeeper Robert Sanchez is looking set to join Cesc Fabregas’ Como side on loan following the signing of Emiliano Martinez. Sanchez was slammed for his performance during Chelsea’s 3-2 win away to Fulham on opening day, forcing the club to move for the World Cup winning goalkeeper. Martinez made his debut on Sunday as Chelsea defeated Brighton 4-3 at Stamford Bridge, with Sanchez being left out of the squad. If any of these deals are set to happen, the clubs involved will need to act fast as the English transfer window closes at 11pm tonight.

New Hibs man raring to go ahead of first Edinburgh Derby

Jacob Devaney made his Hibernian debut on Sunday as Hibs defeated Dundee 2-1 at Dens Park. Speaking post match, he said the prospect of playing in the Edinburgh Derby was a big attraction when he weighed up his prospects for this season.  Devaney impressed many in his debut for David Gray’s side, earning the man of the match award as he looks to fill the #6 shaped hole left by Dan Barlaser. The Irishman is no stranger to Scottish football, spending the second half of last season on loan at St. Mirren, but is relishing the prospect of playing in one of the country’s biggest matches. Speaking after Sunday’s win Devaney discussed his experiences of Hibernian’s European heartbreak against KAA Gent. The midfielder hadn’t joined the club ahead of the first leg, so was resigned to the stands for the second leg. He said: “I got a good glimpse of what the fans can be like on Thursday. “They were amazing. It was a real goosebumps moment in the first five or ten minutes, knowing that I could potentially be playing in front of those fans on Thursday.” The 19-year-old on loan from Manchester United also admitted that he will have to catch up with his teammates on the Edinburgh Derby experience, with focus at Easter Road quickly shifting from Gent to Dundee, and now to Hearts. Devaney said: “I’ve only ever watched the Edinburgh derby on TV. “But the chance to play in it was definitely a big attraction for me coming to Hibs and I’m looking forward to it.” The midfielder was also full of praise for his side’s impressive victory, where the 2-1 scoreline seemed to flatter Dundee, Devaney said: “We wanted to show people how good a team we are, and I think we showed that at times. I thought it was a really good performance and we held on in the end, which was the main thing, getting the three points.” The win was clearly an important one with the match coming so soon after Hibs conceded two late goals to exit the Conference League at the Play-Off stage for the second consecutive year. Dundee scored an 83rd minute goal to pull it back to 2-1 on Sunday which certainly caused some anxiety in the Dens Park away end, but Devaney praised the squad’s mentality and emphasised Hibs’ goals for the season, he said: “The lads could have been forgiven for letting their heads drop after what happened on Thursday. “But it just shows there’s a real spirit in that first team. There’s a great bunch of lads in there, staff included, and I think it’s a group of winners as well. We want to go out and keep getting three points. “It’s a massive club in Scotland, and a team that can push for success this year. We need to keep grinding out three points in the league and hopefully have a good two cup runs as well.” Hibs are now gearing up for their seventh consecutive Thursday night match as they host Hearts in the first Edinburgh Derby of the season in front of a sold-out Easter Road.

Scots Abroad Watch week two: All-Scottish clash in Serie A

Over the weekend three Scotsmen shared the pitch in Serie A as Sassuolo met Torino. Robbie Ure also provided his first assist in Spain as the European leagues ease in. Two clean sheets for Scotsmen in MLS were extremely welcome given their sides recent performances. Liam Henderson: The Hibernian Scottish Cup hero has been plying his trade in Italy for some time now, playing for his sixth Italian club. Now in his second season, Henderson has been wearing the armband this season as the club aims to get out of Serie B. He played the full 90 minutes as his side lost 2-1 at home to Juve Stabia. Sampdoria currently sit 14th in Italy’s third tier. Ryan Porteous: Another ex-Hibs man playing abroad, Porteous’ LA FC side ended their two-game losing run with a 0-0 draw away to DC United. Porteous hasn’t been capped for Scotland since he was sent off in the EURO 2024 opener. Angus Gunn: Another Scotsman ended their MLS losing run this weekend as Angus Gunn’s San Jose Earthquakes drew 0-0 in Texas against Houston Dynamo. Robbie Ure: Sevilla’s new striker earned his first goal contribution in La Liga as he provided an assist in Sevilla’s 3-1 loss to Atletico Madrid on Saturday. Kieron Bowie, Josh Doig & Ché Adams: Sassuolo met Torino in Italy’s top tier this weekend, meaning Kieron Bowie and Josh Doig faced off against Ché Adams. All three Scotsmen started as Sassuolo won 2-1, leaving Torino without a win in their opening two. Scott McTominay& Billy Gilmour: Napoli were defeated 2-1 at home to Cesc Fabregas’ Como side this weekend. Billy Gilmour was once more an unused subtitle for Massimiliano Allegri as McTominay was replaced by Kevin De Bruyne just before the hour mark. Danny Armstong: The former Kilmarnock man has had a great start to the season in Romania so far, providing seven goal contributions in as many games. Despite not scoring or assisting this weekend, Armstrong played the whole match as Dinamo Bucharest drew 1-1 away to Cornivul Hunedoara.
