Aberdeen sign Mats Knoester in attempt to solve defensive frailties

Aberdeen have signed Dutch centre-back Mats Knoester from Hungarian side Ferencvaros. The 26-year-old is the Dons’ fifth signing of the January window, joining on a two-and-a-half-year deal with the option of a further year, subject to international clearance.   Knoester started his career at Dutch giants Feyenoord, developing there for 14 years before moving to Heracles in 2019. After three years at the club, he moved to Ferencvaros, winning the NBI league with them.   Dons manager Jimmy Thelin said: “Mats has a really strong pedigree. His arrival will assist us defensively, providing further reinforcements as a left-sided centre-half.”   After hearing about interest from Aberdeen, Knoester knew they were the only team he wanted to sign for, saying: “I had other options but when I knew Aberdeen were interested, I wanted to come here. I was already aware of the club and how big it was.”   Aberdeen are currently without a league win in 14 games, and Thelin will hope the addition of Knoester will help bring them back to their previous form.

Hibs make no mistake against out of form Aberdeen

Venue: Easter Road Time: 15:00 Date: 01/02/2025 More defensive worries for Aberdeen boss Jimmy Thelin as his side conceded two more goals in what is a worrying run of form for his side. The result moves Hibs up to 5th in the league, just two points behind Aberdeen. They have extended their unbeaten run to ten and will look to hunt down Dundee United for 3rd place. Although having more of the ball and looking in control of the game, Aberdeen struggled to create any clear-cut chances,  looking slow in their build-up and final third play. Their defensive worries continue, making it 22 goals lost in 10 games. Three VAR decisions put a lengthy delay on the full-time whistle as checks for an Aberdeen penalty and to confirm Hibs second goal, took a combined 6 minutes. Nectar Triantis breaks the deadlock for Hibs After a blocked effort at goal from Martin Boyle, Hibs found themselves with a corner 24 minutes into the match. The inswinging corner found Josh Campbell, who won the ball at the back post, sending a header back into the penalty area. Triantis then made no mistake from just outside the 6-yard area, sending his header to the right of Aberdeen goalkeeper Ross Doohan, leaving him standing still. Triantis’ second goal in four games continues Aberdeen’s poor defensive record, as it is the 21st goal conceded in their last 10 matches. Something that Jimmy Thelin will be looking to improve on. Nicky Cadden Doubles the lead In the 48th minute, the ball was crossed into the box by Chris Cadden, striker Dwight Gayle then flicked his header to the back post, and Nicky Cadden was the player to score. His header came in off the crossbar, with Doohan not having a chance to make the save. There was, however, a lengthy VAR check as the player looked to be offside. The check lasted around 3 minutes and built suspense for the Hibs support. The header was eventually awarded, and once again, Aberdeen were punished for their poor defending. The goal was Nickys’ fourth of what has been a positive start to his career at Hibs. The wingback seems to be growing into his game as he continues his impressive form with each start for Hibs. Club-by-club midseason review by fans Part 1: Aberdeen to Hibs

As the January transfer window approaches its final days, we get a fans’ perspective on their club’s season so far. Aberdeen (by @aberdeenfc83) How do you feel about the season so far and what do you expect from the rest of it? I think the season has gone alright so far. In a race for third in our manager’s first season in Scotland, but considering where we were at the start of the season, I’ve got to be disappointed with where we are now. I expect to finish 4th this season along with a good run in the Scottish Cup. 6/10 Star players/ flops I would say the star players of Aberdeen’s season so far would be Pape (Gueye), even though he has been injured and Nicky Devlin, who was probably our most consistent performer during that winning run at the start of the campaign. Biggest surprise of the season so far? My biggest surprise of the season so far would be Shayden Morris. He looked like he didn’t have a future at Aberdeen last season, but this season he has been a sensational asset to bring off the bench. Best/ worst away fans? The best away fans I’ve seen at Pittodrie would be PAOK (from Greece), when I walked into the stadium about half an hour before kick off, the away end was packed and making noise. The worst away fans would probably have to be either Ross County or Livingston. How has your club done in the January window and they need before it closes? Aberdeen have done pretty well in the transfer window. We’ve signed Tobers, Jensen, Dorrington and Okkels. However, we do still need a striker. One player you would take from another Premiership side? I would take Lyall Cameron from Dundee. We have been linked with a move for him which I am pleased about. Celtic (by Aidan and Mack Kelly: Scottish Football Covered Podcast) How do you feel about the season so far and what do you expect from the rest of it? So far, it’s been nearly perfect. The only real disappointment was the level of performance at Ibrox. The improvement in Europe has been so satisfying to see as that’s always been that illusive piece of the puzzle. Going forward, I would like to see us complete the domestic treble, and make a good showing in Europe. 9.5/10 (Mack) Star players/ flops  Nicolas Kuhn probably been standout so far this season. Arne Engels been excellent recently too proved doubters wrong, Cameron Carter-Vickers always up there and Kasper Schmeichel been a great signing. Not many flops if any, would have to say Luis Palma. (Aidan) Biggest surprise of the season so far? Has to be Celtic making Champions League knock-out football finally, but Kyogo leaving is up there now. (Aidan) Best/ worst away fans? Hard to say about away fans since they’re tucked away in a corner and the allocation is so small. Best domestically Aberdeen in the 2-2 draw, but Young Boys were very good aswell. Would be harsh to say Ross County worst so will go RB Leipzig. (Aidan) How has your club done in the January window and they need before it closes? January has been quiet, which is typical last minute of Celtic. The signing of Jota has been a welcomed surprise but it’s bittersweet as it sees Kyogo go the other way, which was so unexpected considering he’s still in great form as well. Hopefully Kieran Tierney can get up the road this month rather than the end of the season, and we sign Mathias Kvistgaarden (Brondby) or some sort of Craig Bellamy/Robbie Keane loan signing for some firepower. (Mack) One player you would take from another Premiership side? I would sign Lennon Miller. The sky is the limit for him and would fit the homegrown quota. Although if I’m being honest, there’s a solid argument to suggest his development would very well be best suited elsewhere, but if the right compromise can be met, I would love to see us sign him and avoid another John McGinn scenario. (Mack) Dundee (by Jackie) How do you feel about the season so far and what do you expect from the rest of it? I feel Dundee’s season has been very inconsistent. We’ve had some real good days and some really bad days. I feel the loss of Luke McCowan has had an impact on the team and the team had to try to adjust without him. I feel that this has taken some time and we are still struggling a bit. We have had some really good results recently and long may that continue. We have also had a good few injuries recently and have still come out with a point against each of the old firm at home and beat Utd in the cup. We were very unlucky against them at New Year. I hope as our injured players return we can only get better. 7/10 Star players/ flops Mo Sylla has been outstanding! Player of the season for me! Also Josh Mulligan! We need to get them signed up quickly. I don’t like to say who our flops are as it’s a team and I genuinely can’t pick someone, however, Jon McCracken has had some seriously questionable games! Biggest surprise of the season so far? At the start of January after being beaten by our rivals & looking at our fixtures, I had us bottom of the league & out of the Scottish Cup by the end of January! They definitely proved me wrong! Best/ worst away fans? Best – Dundee Utd, as much as I don’t like them for 90 mins, the atmosphere is the best from both sets of fans! Worst – Celtic/Rangers – I’m not fond of their song choices or when they try to set our stand on fire… How has your club done in the January window and they need before it closes? Not too bad I’m happy! We got Aaron

Unlucky number 13 for Dons as St Mirren loss extends winless league run

Jimmy Thelin’s hapless winter continued as Aberdeen were soundly beaten by St Mirren at Pittodrie. In a frenetic opening to proceedings, the home side found themselves under the cosh just seven minutes in after Slobodan Rubezic made a calamitous error to head a simple ball back to Ross Doohan past the keeper and allow Toyosi Olusanya to run in and finish. The Montenegran’s nightmare outing continued as he was all too easily muscled off the ball by Olusanya who proceeded to cut the ball back to an unmarked Mikael Mandron with the Frenchman doubling their lead. Making his struggles known to the bench Rubezic was seen asking to be substituted with just before half-time played as Dorrington came on to make his first appearance since arriving on loan from Tottenham. Despite being the dominant side for large parts of the second half, Aberdeen contrived to concede a third as Mandron added another goal to his tally after racing onto Alex Gogic’s launched ball up the park. Defeat means the Dons have yet to record a league win since November, with another defeat to St Mirren marking the start of their slide down the table.   Line-ups: Aberdeen: Doohan, Jensen, Rubezic (Dorrington 40), Tobers, Devlin, Shinnie (c), Heltne Nilsen (Palaversa 46), Okkels (Morris 70), Clarkson (Nisbet 55), Keskinen, Gueye (Duk 70) Unused subs: Ambrose, Boyd, MacKenzie, Ritchie Booked: Keskinen, Duk St Mirren: Hemming, Gogic, Taylor, Fraser, Tanser, O’Hara (Kiltie 46), Boyd-Munce (Smyth 72), Phillips, Penman (Bwomoni 26), Olusanya (Mooney 81), Mandron (Oseni 81) Unused subs: John, Kenny, Scott, Urminsky Booked: Penman, Hemming, Bwomono, Tanser, Kiltie Goals: Olusanya (7), Mandron (36, 78) Referee: Chris Graham

Aberdeen end 12 game winless run at Elgin and more in Scottish Cup Round-up

Aberdeen will hope their convincing 3-0 win over League Two side Elgin City will help get their season back on track as they earned a victory for the first time thirteen games. A Shayden Morris opener followed by a second half Duk double put the Dons on track for a breezy progression to the next round, the task made all the easier by Lyall Booth’s dismissal after two yellow cards with over fifteen minutes remaining. Defending champions Celtic overcame a stubborn Kilmarnock side in a 2-1 victory. Captain Callum McGregor had opened the scoring with long range effort but the visitors responded just before the break through teenager Bobby Wales. In the end, the home side proved too strong with Daizan Maeda putting the tie to bed in the second half. After going into the break just a goal up, Rangers turned on the style in the second half to dispatch the spirited Highland League Fraserburgh side 5-0. A Cyriel Dessers hat-trick and goals from Clinton Nsiala and Ross McCausland ensured the home side would have their name in Monday night’s draw. Despite an impressive turnout in the away end, West of Scotland Premier Division’s Clydebank were powerless to stop Hibernian coming away 3-0 victors at Easter Road. With his 5th and 6th goals in just three games Martin Boyle was in fine form to dispatch the sixth tier side. The captain also added an assist for eighteen year old Rudi Molotnikov to his tally for the afternoon. Hearts came back from a goal down to ease to a 4-1 victory over Highland League side Brechin City. Seventeenth minute substitute Scott Bright fired the home side ahead just six minutes later before Yan Dhanda ensured they went into the break level. Neil Critchley’s side pulled away in the subsequent half with Kevin McHattie’s own goal and a double from new signing Elton Kabangu sealing the tie. Championship club Livingston provided the upset of round, scoring in the penultime minute of extra-time to seal a 3-2 win over Ross County in Dingwall. A penalty from Robbie Muirhead had given the away side the lead before Jordan White equalised. David Martindale’s side re-gained the advantage courtesy of Cristian Montano’s goal before County pulled level once again thanks to Ronan Hale. However in the 119th minute Andrew Shinnie ensured there was no way back for the Premiership side to seal progression to the Last 16. St Mirren proved too strong for League One’s Queen of the South with a 3-1 victory in Dumfries. Toyosi Olusanya’s first half double had set the visitors on their way before Brennan Dickinson pulled one back for Queens. The third tier side struggled for a leveller until substitute Caolan Boyd-Munce dashed their hopes in added time. Manager Simo Valikari will hope St Johnstone‘s 1-0 win over Motherwell can kickstart a climb out of the relegation zone in the coming weeks. Scoring after just nine minutes, Makenzie Kirk ensured fans in Perth could finally celebrate a weekend of football. Meanwhile Championship side Ayr United delivered a 8-0 pummelling of Lowland League side Broxburn Athletic. League One’s Dumbarton suffered a 5-1 home loss to Championship strugglers Airdrieonians. There was extra-time joy for fellow Championship side Queen’s Park who came away 3-2 winners over League One team Montrose. Third tier Stenhousemuir could do little to prevent the Championship’s Dunfermline from powering to a 3-0 victory. Hamilton Academical of League One made their way to the next round after putting away East of Scotland Premier Division side Musselburgh Athletic 3-1. Meanwhile Cove Rangers ensured their would be another member of Scotland’s third division in the Last 16 as they cruised to a 2-0 win over Forfar Athletic.

Gers Down Dons as Thelin’s misery continues

Hamza Igamane continued his hot streak as his early goal set Rangers on their way to all three points in a convincing 3-0 victory over a hapless Aberdeen. Igamane gave Rangers a 1-0 lead going into the second half and after a flurry of missed chances, Leon Balogun and Cyriel Dessers completed the win with two late goals in stoppage time. Rangers quickly settled into their rhythm, dominating the early stages of the match. Hamza Igamane has been the man of the moment for Rangers in the last few months and he could’ve put the Gers ahead inside 10 minutes. Kevin Nisbet was dispossessed in the middle of the park and Vaclav Cerny instantly picked out Igamane. With just the keeper to beat the forward was already wheeling away in celebration but his effort whistled by the post to keep the game level. Aberdeen didn’t learn from that early warning however and this time Igamane made no mistake. Nilsen failed to control a simple pass from Doohan and Cerny pounced on the make-shift defender. He drove into the Aberdeen area and cut it back to Diomande. His initial effort was blocked but Igamane was there to hammer the ball into the net to give Rangers the early lead. Aberdeen offered little in the first half but Leighton Clarkson almost produced a moment of magic before the half-hour. He jumped on a loose ball inside the centre circle and went for a spectacular lob that almost had Kelly beat but he scampered back to just keep the ball out. Rangers responded instantly and Danilo will feel he should’ve gotten the second of the night. Hagi had been controlling the game and slipped a through ball into the striker that split the Aberdeen defence. Danilo lifted his strike but Doohan was out quick to deny him a goal. Half-time: Rangers 1 – 0 Aberdeen Rangers started the second half continuing to ask questions of the Aberdeen back-line. Hagi’s strike from the edge of the area looked destined to beat Doohan but it whizzed off the crossbar to keep Aberdeen in the game. Aberdeen were hanging on as the half progressed and Rangers pushed for a second. Both Hagi and Bajrami had efforts from the edge of the area that only just missed the mark. Jimmy Thelin tried to breathe some new life into his lacklustre forward line by bringing on Duk and Morris with Kevin Nisbet and Keskinen putting in another disappointing performance. The changes failed to change the momentum however with Aberdeen continuously turning the ball over with slack pass after slack pass. With ten minutes to go Aberdeen tried to throw bodies forward in an attempt to grab an unlikely equaliser. Shayden Morris was lively when he came on but familiar problems in front of goal arose again for Aberdeen as they failed to create any clear chances that troubled Liam Kelly. Rangers finally thought they had a second minutes from full-time when Leon Balogun glanced a header from a corner but his effort struck the post much to the dismay of the Union Bears behind the goal. With minutes of the 7 added left, Rangers finally put the game to bed. Tavernier’s corner went over everyone but Nsiala was on hand to put the ball back into the area and Balogun rose highest at the back post to rubber stamp the 3 points for Rangers. With seconds left, Dessers then compounded the misery for Thelin’s men. Dorrington let the ball bounce over him and then slipped which let Dessers run at Topers. He cut onto his left and drove it low and past Doohan to complete the game. Full-time Rangers 3 – 0 Aberdeen Teams Rangers: Kelly (GK); Ridvan, Propper (Balogun 74), Nsiala, Jefte, Diomande, Raskin (C), Hagi (Tavernier 78), Cerny, Danilo (Bajrami 46), Igamane (Dessers 88) Aberdeen: Doohan (GK); Devlin, Shinnie, Nilsen, McGarry (Jensen 71), Tobers, Clarkson, Okkels (Polvara 71), Palaversa (Dorrington 64), Keskinen (Morris 66), Nisbet (Duk 64) Referee: Kevin Clancy, Graeme Stewart and David Roome. Aberdeen go ten without a win as Motherwell triumph

Venue: Fir Park                                                                     Date: 05/01/25                                                          Time: 15:00pm   Aberdeen’s recent woes continued as they fell to their 10th consecutive game without a victory, dropping into fourth and only four points ahead of Motherwell. Having been dominant throughout the first half, the home side were rewarded for their efforts when Ewan Wilson lashed home a ball the Dons had failed to clear. Desperately needing a result, Jimmy Thelin’s men did themselves no favours as Slobodan Rubezic reacted to Tony Watt’s provocations, making head contact to earn himself a straight red. Taking full advantage of the numerical advantage, Motherwell scored just two minutes later through Tawanda Maswanhise Motherwell could have opened the scoring sooner when Andy Halliday’s curling long ball found on the head of an oncoming Dan Casey who lifted his hands in disbelief after putting the effort wide. Similarly Aberdeen had chances of their own, Nicky Devlin leapt into the air to head in an corner but Aston Oxborough did ever so well to deny the Scotland international. Looking improved with ten men, the visitors continued to probe for an opener, Duk guilty of not setting himself correctly to put away a ball Topi Keskinen sent skimming across the turf. Leighton Clarkson came closest, his effort from distance beating Oxborough but rattling the crossbar and bouncing away. Late on Maswanhise saw his effort fly low past Kris Doohan’s left hand side but by then game looked over as Motherwell secured their first win in five. Aberdeen’s woes continue as Kilmarnock score four

Venue: Rugby Park                                                            Date: 26/12/24                                                             Time: 15:00   Aberdeen’s abysmal form continued as Kilmarnock made sure they returned north without a win in seven games.   In the face of a difficult season, Kyle Vassell stepped up to open the scoring for the home side, meeting Fraser Murray’s cross but needing a second stab at the ball to get it over the line.  David Watson surrounded by three Aberdeen defenders finished a Danny Armstrong cross to deflate Jimmy Thelin’s men.  Substitute Innes Cameron put paid to the visitors’ hopes with a deft chip after Murray continued to dazzle for Derek McInes’ side.  Bruce Anderson’s finish in added time ensured it would be an even longer trip back to Aberdeen, who should have no qualms about the final score.  The signs were there from the off with the Dons looking unrecognisable from the side that had been neck and neck with Celtic just weeks ago, David Watson putting the first big chance of the game wide was the start of an onslaught.  Duk made a goal line clearance to prevent Joe Wright from putting Killie ahead.  Nicky Devlin had a chance for the visitors but could not put his attempt on target.  Bobby Wales continued his breakout season with an impressive performance but his cross late in the first half was unfortunate to not find a target to prod in a second.  Dimitar Mitov continued to show why he has been an inspired signing despite the poor run of form, a fantastic save keeping out Murray from distance.  The Kilmarnock forward could have scored not long after his first but could not direct his shot goal bound.   With three points in their pocket the home side moved to within five points of the play off places.   Attendance: 6, 846 Line-ups: Kilmarnock: R.
