Rangers 2-0 Aberdeen: Rohl’s Men overcome Managerless Dons to move Second

Rangers 2-0 Aberdeen Fernandez (11′). Raskin (41′) First-half headers from Emmanuel Fernandez and Nico Raskin secured a fourth straight league win for Rangers, as they continue their climb towards the summit of the Scottish Premiership. The home side, inspired by their derby day victory over Celtic, started on the front foot, looking to leapfrog their fierce rivals into second place. Former Aberdeen youngster Connor Barron almost capitalised on a Dimitar Mitov mistake in the opening minutes, but could not direct his strike on goal from James Tavernier’s free-kick. The lead arrived in the 10th minute thanks to Emmanuel Fernandez. The defender added his fifth goal of the season after leaping to convert Barron’s inswinging corner kick. Mitov claimed to be handled by Mikey Moore, but Nick Walsh quickly confirmed the opener. Despite the routine start for the hosts, Kenan Bilalovic discovered a golden chance to strike level. Nicky Devlin’s hopeful ball split the Rangers’ backline, allowing Bilalovic to stride towards Jack Butland’s goal. But a poor touch from the Swede gave the goalkeeper precious time to gather. Danny Rohl’s side reestablished their dominance, with half-chances for Barron and derby hero Mikey Moore, but Bilalovic would have yet another golden opportunity on the half-hour mark. Kevin Nisbet dispossessed Nico Raskin, and after racing toward goal, he squared to his fellow attacker. Once more, the Swede was unable to sort his feet, and the chance slipped away. Mitov was alert to tip Tavernier’s whipping free kick over the bar as the game trickled towards halftime. Rangers had enjoyed plenty of possession since the Fernandez header, but were unable to fashion clear-cut chances throughout the first period. That was until Raskin converted Barron’s latest delivery in the 40th minute. The Belgian midfielder darted towards the front post from the right-sided corner and headed across Mitov to double the Gers’ advantage. A frustrating end to the half for interim Aberdeen boss Peter Leven, whose side had disappointingly conceded from almost identical set pieces. Raskin should have converted another set piece, this time from Tavernier, with seconds to play in the half. But it was so far so good for Rohl’s rejuvenated side. Rangers continued to control the game in a comfortable second-half display. The incoming Thelo Aasgaard tested Mitov with a left-footed strike as the clock ticked towards the hour mark. Beforehand, Tavernier had jinked away from Graeme Shinnie on the edge of the box, but his right-footed strike rose over the bar. Jack Butland had to be alert to tip Nisbet’s looping header around the post in a rare Aberdeen attack, before Dante Polvara headed over from the resultant corner. With ten minutes to play, Mitov produced a tremendous finger-tip save from Raskin’s darting 20-yard strike, which looked set to ripple the side-netting. Victory secured 2nd spot for Rangers, who will meet managerless Aberdeen again next Sunday in the league. It remains to be seen if the Dons will have their man or if Leven will still be in the dugout. Thelin has stated that he “accepts” his fate following the decision to end his time in the North-East.

The Swede enjoyed a historic high during his tenure, leading Aberdeen to Scottish Cup glory with a memorable victory over holders Celtic at the national stadium. However, despite that success, his spell in the Granite City has now come to an end. Thelin met with the Aberdeen board — Dave Cormack, Allan Burrows and Lutz Pfannenstiel — to formally conclude his departure, as the club begins its search for a sixth manager in the space of just four years. It is fair to say Thelin was backed financially, with significant investment made in Bilalovic, Milanovic and highly rated youngster Mitchell Frame. However, none were able to consistently live up to expectations. Peter Leven will take interim charge alongside Craig Hinchliffe for the upcoming double-header next week, where Aberdeen will face Rangers at Ibrox. Thelin said: “Today my time as manager at Aberdeen comes to an end. It is with great respect for this historic Club that I accept this decision. “Results ultimately decide the tenure of this profession, and as such I take my share of responsibility. “I believe wholly in the work that was done; however, football doesn’t always allow time for belief to become results. I would like to thank the players for their commitment and effort during my time as their coach, and the staff who worked every day with loyalty and pride. “I would also like to thank the supporters. Your passion for your team never waivers, even in disappointment. “Aberdeen will forever be a part of my journey, and it has been an honour to lead this great Club and share that memorable day together at Hampden. “I leave wishing success to everyone involved both on and off the pitch.” Chairman Dave Cormack added: “In wishing Jimmy and Christer the very best for the future I want to thank them for delivering our first Scottish Cup win in 35 years last May. “These memories will last a lifetime, and Jimmy will be forever etched into Aberdeen’s history for delivering such a special day for our supporters, as only one of six Aberdeen managers to win the Scottish Cup in our storied 122-year history. “However, after significant investment in recent windows, we have not kicked on in the way we hoped or expected following that success. We have tried to give the situation as much time as possible, but recent performances have been significantly below the standards we expect, and we believe it is now right to take a different direction.”

Jimmy Thelin sacked following a disappointing league campaign so far

Aberdeen boss Jimmy Thelin has been shown the exit door following a very poor season for Aberdeen this season as the Dons sit eighth in the Premiership. It is confirmed that it’s over for the Swedish boss as his time in the granite city has came to an end. Jimmy Thelin joined the Dons from Elfsborg back in 2024. Jimmy started off the best he could’ve hoped going on an 11 game unbeaten streak including a win over Rangers and coming back from 2-0 away to Celtic to level the game to 2-2. The Dons then went on a poor run of form which began with a 6-0 battering at Hampden against Celtic. In the League, Aberdeen went 14 games without a win which came as a shock following their exceptional league start. Just after the Christmas period, Aberdeen looked a lot better as they managed to see out wins again but some heavy defeats also. Aberdeen did book a place in the Scottish Cup Semi-finals as they defeated Hearts where they had a chance for silverware against the holders, Celtic. Aberdeen did manage to end their 35-year run without winning the Scottish Cup as a penalty shootout victory earned Aberdeen the proudest moment in recent times. Although, this season hasn’t brought the same emotions as it’s been a pretty dull campaign so far. Aberdeen were dumped out the Europa League by FCSB which they gained Conference League football but really struggled as they ended the campaign 35th out of 36 teams with 0 wins on the board. They also fell short in the Scottish League Cup to Motherwell after a 1-0 defeat at Pittodrie. Aberdeen sit 8th in the League after 20 games with 7 wins, 4 draws and 9 defeats. Thelin has now matched former Dons boss, Barry Robson’s win percentage at 42%. It is also noted Jimmy Thelin had offered his resignation twice back in November as it is set to be game over for Jimmy Thelin tonight.

Aberdeen showing interest in young Dundee defender following impressive season so far

Aberdeen are believed to be keen on Dundee centre-back, Luke Graham as Jimmy Thelin insists, he’s keen to reinforce their backline. The 21-year-old began his career in Perth playing for the St Johnstone academy before making a short move to the Dundee youth academy in his early days. In 2021, he was given loan spell at SJFA Midlands League side, Lochee United in the sixth tier of Scottish Football to gain some valuable minutes as his age 16. The 2004 born defender made a loan move to Albion Rovers the following season being a critical player for Albion Rovers. After the impressive loan spell, Graham went on loan to League One outfit, Montrose making 27 appearances at Links Park. Graham was then sent out on loan to Falkirk in League One helping the Bairns to promotion to the Championship where he re-joins John McGlynn’s side on loan before being re-called midway through his spell in the Championship which Falkirk did make it back to the top-flight. So far this season, the Dundee youth prospect has made 23 appearances for the Dees picking up two goals along the way. Luke has also made five appearances for the Scotland U21s where he also grabbed his first International goal. Luke Graham has played the full 90 in all his last 13 outings and has helped Dundee pick up three consecutive wins for the first time in 11 years. With his impressive form at Dens so far this campaign, a move up North to Aberdeen could be on the cards with Jimmy Thelin interested in the young Scottish defender.

Jimmy Thelin feels his squad must “drop egos” following their 1-0 defeat at Falkirk yesterday.

Aberdeen boss Jimmy Thelin feels the squad have an issue with their egos which must drop quickly. Aberdeen were defeated 1-0 away to Falkirk yesterday in which was a very flat performance by Aberdeen where the Dons boss has slammed some players for their ‘egos’. Dons boss Jimmy Thelin said: “I won’t talk much about the game, but more about ourselves. The desire, there’s too many individual decisions. “Football is more than technique and systems. It’s how you act on the football pitch. It’s about responsibility. We’ve been here before, we’ve bounced back, but now we’re back some steps again. “Even if you don’t have the perfect game, it should always feel like we give the fans everything, and right now we aren’t doing that. That’s not good enough. “I’m the manager, I’m responsible, but sometimes the players have to look in the mirror and know what football is about. “We had some good crosses today but we weren’t close to using these opportunities. We have to drop our egos and play much better as a team. “The second half, we start okay but in these small situations, the opponents win. We get beat, and down in these moments. We have to change this mentality.” This comes after Aberdeen were defeated 1-0 by the Bairns as pressure continues to ramp on Jimmy Thelin. Aberdeen are currently winless in their last five as the Dons slump down to eighth in the Scottish Premiership. In the Falkirk defeat, the Dons boss went for the back four for the first time this season after using a back three for the majority of the season so far. Aberdeen didn’t manage to pull off a single shot on target during their tight defeat at Falkirk. Jimmy added: He said: “We changed system and it didn’t work so well in the first half, although it was a little bit better in the second. “However, there were moments in the Hibs game (2-0 loss) and this one where there is too much ego. “When the ref doesn’t give us a free-kick we stop playing but we have to fight, fight, fight much more in the games to be more competitive. “We have talked about this before and we went on to be better. “But now we have dropped back again. “We have to change this otherwise it is so, so difficult to win football games.” The Aberdeen boss now has a win rate percentage of just 42% which is now the same as Barry Robson who was eventually sacked and most recently sacked by Scottish Championship side, Raith Rovers. Aberdeen have a very tough week ahead as they travel to Ibrox to face Rangers on Tuesday before the host Rangers again on Sunday at Pittodrie.

Falkirk 1-0 Aberdeen: Dominant Bairns Shoot into Top Six

Falkirk 1-0 Aberdeen Lissah (58′) Filip Lissah’s second-half header secured a deserved home victory for the Bairns against a passive Aberdeen side, who were unable to register a shot on target. The home side dominated large spells of the first half. Liam Henderson pounced on a Jack Milne pass just minutes in, and after feeding Calvin Millar on the left, he headed the resultant cross into Dimitar Mitov’s hands. The move set the tone for a one-sided first half, with Aberdeen looking increasingly fragile at the back. The visitors nearly registered an opening shortly after. Kenan Bilalovic, awarded with his first start, latched onto Jesper Karlsson’s forward pass, but his low delivery evaded Kevin Nisbet in the six-yard box. Henderson won a promising free kick for the Bairns after 9 minutes. Miller stepped up, whipping a dangerous left-footed strike, which looked set to finish in the bottom corner, but Mitov turned behind. Brad Spencer tested Mitov from the edge of the box after 12 minutes, as the home side continued their search for the opener. Falkirk’s dominance was largely down to the midfield pivot of Spencer and Dylan Tait, who had equal space and time to control proceedings from the centre of the park. The visiting support filled out the away section, and the sea of red voiced their disapproval of this passive performance. Spencer pounced on another slack ball from the visitors on the 20-minute mark, but Barney Stewart pushed his curling effort over the bar. Next, it was Miller’s turn to drive at the heart of the Dons’ defence three minutes later. He found Kyrell Wilson on the left edge of the box, who cut inside and struck from the edge of the box. Mitov momentarily tipped the effort into the air, but gathered the ball to keep the score goalless. Falkirk should have been ahead close to halftime. Another dangerous Spencer corner was dropped kindly for Miller in the box. From ten yards, the midfielder could not get his head over the ball as his strike sailed into the stands. The final chance of the half dropped to the visitors, Nisbet’s wayward strike drifted high into the Kevin McAllister Stand after a long Mitov ball. The Dons remained level as John Beaton blew his whistle for halftime, but would need vast improvements if they were to pick up a result. The Bairns finally found the breakthrough on the hour mark. Filip Lissah rose in the six-yard box to head home a left-sided set piece. The goal warranted the hosts’ positive display, delighting their large contingent of supporters. Nisbet nearly connected with Topi Keskinen’s low cross from the right moments later, after sensational skill from substitute Sivert Nilsen. The duo linked again in the 68th minute, with the striker’s header looking destined to nestle inside Scott Bain’s post. Thankfully for the hosts, the effort bounced off the post and trickled wide, maintaining their slender advantage. The hosts wrestled back control of the game and nearly sealed the game with mere minutes to play. Substitute Henry Cartwright drove at the Aberdeen defence, unleashing a low 25-yard strike which cannoned off the post and behind. Victory moves Falkirk into the top six, marking a perfect start to their 2026 campaign. They travel to Paisley to face a struggling St Mirren side next weekend. Jimmy Thelin and his Aberdeen side berated their side’s poor performance at full-time. A quick turnaround sees them travel to Ibrox on Tuesday evening, ahead of a double header with Rangers. Falkirk: Bain 8 Lissah 8 Allan 7 Henderson 9 McCann 8 Tait 8 Spencer 8 Yeats 8 Wilson 7 Miller 8 Stewart 7 Substitutes: Ross 7 Graham 6 Williams 6 Agyeman 6 Cartwright 6 Aberdeen: Mitov 6 Lobban 5 Knoester 6 Milne 6 Shinnie 4 Aouchiche 3 Armstrong 5 Bilalovic 4 Karlsson 5 Keskinen 5 Nisbet 5 Substitutes: Nilson 5 Polvara 5 Devlin 4 Milanovic 4 Lazetic 4

Jimmy Thelin states “we don’t have many options” as Aberdeen target a central defender

The Dons are currently without duo Kristers Tobers and Gavin Molloy through injury with on-loan Tottenham Hotspur defender, Alfie Dorrington potentially being recalled by the Premier League side this January. “We don’t have many options,” Jimmy Thelin stated.  “That’s also how they have managed this pressure, the players, to play so many games in such a short time and space. “So who knows? Tobers is out for the rest of the season. Let’s also see what we have in terms of how some players are pushing. “Maybe they still have a journey to do, but also in the academy, to create space and pathways for our players that we have invested in before the season and the way we’re working now with the academy. “In January, for sure there are going to be movements in and out. “We will see when January is over, what has happened.” So let’s see how we balance the squad after January.” Aberdeen skipper, Graeme Shinnie is currently eyeing up a new deal at Pittodrie with midfielder, Dante Polvara’s contract all expiring come the end of the season with the American international being linked with Hibernian a while back. He added: “Again, as I said, I’m always in the window. If we’re going to say something, we have something to say, but he’s a really good captain for this club.” Vicente Besuijen who’s been out on loan with Finnish outfit, HJK Helsinki has returned to the Granite City despite not being available to play until the January window opens. Jimmy Thelin said: “He is training. He has taken care of himself. He is prepared for when the window opens. He can’t play until the window opens again. He is in a good shape and he has brought a good energy to the team in a positive way.” There has also been talk of a move for Aberdeen midfielder, Sivert Heltne Nilsen with a possible switch to Asane being on the cards for the Norwegian international. Nilsen was struck with injury last campaign due to a rare eye injury but a move closer to home could be an option for the 34-year-old this January. The midfielder has made 13 appearances for the Dons so far this season where he popped up with a goal in the early stages of the campaign scoring in a 3-0 win over Greenock Morton in the Premier Sports Cup.

Celtic 3-1 Aberdeen – An early Christmas gift for Nancy as he picks up his first win as Celtic boss

Aberdeen make the trip down to Glasgow to face Celtic in a Christmas Cracker as the Dons hope to make it five defeats in a row for Wilfried Nancy and Celtic. An early pacey run for Maeda with a cross into the box but just a bit ahead of Kenny which doesn’t allow Celtic to take an early lead. Engles came close himself, a volley from the edge of the box which fired over the bar. Aberdeen had a dangerous attack but Trusty stopping Lazetic striking after giving away the ball to Karlsson. Trusty to the rescue again as Keskinen with a strike this time from close range but a very crucial block by the USA international. Nygren again following a few nice short passes beforehand with Mitov saving well to prevent a Celtic lead. Huge chance for Kenny, a mistake by Mitov which landed at McGregor with Kenny receiving the ball but the attempt strolling wide of goal. Nygren fired Celtic ahead, it began by a Lobban mistake which Yang won back, slotted the ball to Maeda who fed it into Nygren who made no mistake and fired Celtic ahead. Keskinen came close, twisting and turning and unleashed an effort at the near post with Schmeichel tipping it out. Karlsson was close shortly after, a strike from distance which fired wide of target. A phenomenal stop by Mitov in goal, McCowan with a powerful strike just out the box being well saved by the Dons keeper. Dylan Lobban was shown red following a Mitov error, Maeda was through on goal by the Aberdeen youngster pulling back the Celtic star which was surely an obvious red. Nygren should’ve fired Celtic two ahead early second half, a strike from the left hand side of the box which smacked the inside of the post where Mitov comfortably collected. Ralston this time, an effort from outside the box well saved by the Aberdeen number one. Engles then quickly smacked the bar following a shot from inside the box. A low cross into the box after an hour by Kenny which fizzled across the box failing to find its way into the net to keep it at just the one goal. Celtic rattle the post once again, a diving header by Arne Engles where he smacks the ball against the post. Nygren showing his class again, an effort from the edge of the box which fires just wide of target. Celtic should be more ahead but remain just the one goal separating the sides. Aberdeen fired level unexpectedly, Kjartansson winning the ball back, slots it into Bilalovic who makes no mistake and brings the visitors back on level terms. Brilliant defensive work by Aberdeen as Celtic kept trying to get back ahead. Very nervy end to the game at Celtic Park. Youngster Donovan whipped a great ball in, failing to be met by Maeda and Shin but there was Tierney to fire the ball in to bring Celtic back in front. James Forrest wrapped up the win as a low cross by the captain which landed at Forrest who made no mistake and converted past Mitov to seal the win. Shin nearly made it four, a header from outside the box which hit the outside of the bar to keep the score at 3-1. A very big three points in the Nancy era at Celtic as the champions return to winning ways over Aberdeen. Celtic: Schmeichel (6), Trusty (8), Nygren (8), Yang (7), McCowan (7), Kenny (6), Engles (8), Maeda (7), McGregor (8), Ralston (7), Tierney (9). Aberdeen AGM update

Aberdeen tonight held their AGM, covering key points within the last 12 months. Dave Cormack began to praise the Dons’ support for their excellent support in helping out fans engagement in which saw a rise of 35% in attendances at Pittodrie over the last year. The average age groups heading to Pittodrie went from 48 to 35 also. Cormack went onto speak about the famous Scottish Cup win calling the fans out for their “amazing” and “unrelenting support” as Aberdeen won their first Scottish Cup in 35 years following a penalty shootout win over Celtic. The chairman then went on to speak about the new stadium project suggesting he was very disappointed with the false information on Aberdeen’s financial side of things when looking towards to the new stadium at Aberdeen beach. Dave said they hadn’t made it obvious of the “3.2billion economic upside” of the potential new ground at the beachfront. Cormack did confirm he and Chief executive, Allan Burrows will come together with Aberdeen City Council co-workers to hopefully progress in talks. The Dons’ are also setting sights on a covered pitch at their training ground, Cormack Park after a few months ago, stakeholders handed £8million to put into Aberdeen Football Club. Jimmy Thelin spoke about in the future, they may look into bringing in a set-piece coach but stated Aberdeen “educate our own coaches at it using connections with other clubs” and also said the squad are “working on it a lot. Another key talking point was Dante Polvara signing a new deal. Thelin confirms Dante is “quite happy right now” as well as “he’s talking with his people” as the Dons’ look to get the contract signed soon. New sporting director, Pfannenstiel suggested a possible recall despite being unlikely in January on Findlay Marshall after impressing so far on loan at Scottish Championship side, Arbroath. Pfannenstiel said he’s “definitely a vert talented player who trains in Cormack Park every day in front of our eyes”. Jimmy was also asked why new signings Frame, Bilalovic and Kjartansson weren’t being played. Jimmy is going towards the youth more than recent additions with Dylan Lobban and Jack Milne playing week in, week out while making great progress. Jimmy said his plan is to “keep working with the squad so when the players move the next one is ready”. He added: “The idea is to bring them in as early as possible” also adding “You are buying their potential”. Thelin provided a small summary of what to expect in the upcoming window: “We have a clear idea of what we want to do – as little as possible, but strengthen the squad”. The dons’ boss added “We have a good squad, but we need to adjust some parts” There has been some talk of late about players who may see the exit door such as Kusini Yengi who has only scored once since arriving in the summer and Leighton Clarkson who has dropped down the pecking order as the former Liverpool man searches for game time. They wrapped up on VAR after chairman, Dave Cormack suggested VAR should be limited to just 60 seconds while speaking to BBC on Saturday. Dave said “Almost nine minutes of VAR checks against the Dons side against St Mirren” Cormack said VAR was “brought in for clear decisions” and “if it takes four-and-a-half minutes, it’s nae clear and obvious”. The game lasted up until just after the 100 minute mark and the club figured out in the 3-3 draw with the Buddies’ last week, the ball was on the pitch for just over 50 minutes all down to the lengthy VAR checks and other issues causing to run down the clock.

Jimmy Thelin believes last night was the ‘maybe our best performance this season’ following a 3-3 draw with St Mirren

Jimmy Thelin fully believes that the draw at home to the Buddies was their best performance of the season so far. The dons drew 3-3 at Pittodrie yesterday evening despite being 3-2 up last on, Richard King suffered a big blow to take one point back down to Paisley. St Mirren had taken the lead after 55 minutes after a lengthy VAR check in which lead to a penalty where Marcus Fraser dispatched. A very high-scoring fixture as both sides shared the points. Aberdeen have lately been praised for their defensive work but it is safe to say, their defensive work wasn’t at their best last night, conceding three to Stephen Robinson’s men however have also had issues in the scoring side which is one positive to take. Ahead of Dundee on Saturday, Jimmy said: “Of course, after a game it’s a lot of emotions and you play maybe our best performance so far this season. “You score three goals, you are one down and you come back and then 2-2, and then you score another one, and then you lose a goal in the last second of the game – of course, it’s tough. “But it’s another game on Saturday and I think the team performed really well the whole game better on what we talked about before this game – the creativity and the goals we scored, the chances we created in both halves. “Sometimes this is football. Of course, you want to win and losing a goal in the last second of the game is tough. “But the players performed really well today.” Jimmy was in full praise in the attacking side by the Paisley outfit. A very last minute goal by the Buddies sealed a point for the struggling St Mirren side which will only boost confidence. Thelin said:  “To be fair to St Mirren, they did well in the situation they created in the end and take the opportunity. “Of course we can learn and do something better, how we come closer to the opponents in the last minute of the game and these kind of things. “So it was disappointing, the result – but the performance was good. You probably should have been goals up at half-time again. “We have another game on Saturday and I think the team and the players are growing. So the result today and when the goal comes, there can be a lot of emotions on that one. “But we need to stay focused that we actually did a good performance. “I know football is always about winning, but our last period now has been good in results and also now the performance was really good. “So we have to focus on the right things and recover again and take the next challenge on Saturday.” Jimmy Thelin later spoke on the referee and VAR as roughly nine minutes were added following lengthy stoppages. Jimmy said: “The referees are the referees and we focus on other things.” He added: “It’s a lot of minutes (at the end), especially when you have a lot of… I think it was 10 or 11 minutes, something. “And then you play so many games, it’s a lot of extra minutes. “But that’s the rules and we have to follow the rules and then we have to adapt and grow.” Aberdeen decided to see the game out and make defensive changes but Gavin Molloy who was only just on was soon forced off with an issue leaving Aberdeen with ten men. The dons boss stated: “Let’s see. “That’s one of the most important things now. But this just happened so we need to assess him and then maybe we’ll know tomorrow. “I hope everything is fine.”
