Airdrieonians 1-2 St Mirren – Match Report

Championship side Airdrieonians host Premiership side and current League Cup holders St Mirren for a place in the Last 8 of the Scottish Cup. Devaney found Young on the edge of the box, who had a shot, but his effort was comfortably saved by Stone in the Airdrieonians goal. The visitors found the breakthrough after 19 minutes. Mandron flicked the ball into the path of Devaney, who found space on the edge of the box and found the top left corner. A moment of magic from the Manchester United youngster to give St Mirren an early lead. St Mirren continued to pile the pressure on. The ball eventually broke to Richardson inside the Airdrie box, who had a go on the volley, but his effort was well saved by Stone. Phillips found Richardson down the right flank, who played a dangerous ball across goal looking for Mandron, but Ross came sliding in and denied the striker a tap in. From the resulting corner, Devaney sent the ball straight out of play. On 33 minutes, the Airdrie supporters and players were adamant that their side should have been awarded a penalty. Barjonas was caught by the right leg of King, but the appeals were waved away by the referee Kevin Clancy. Mandron found space on the edge of the box down the other end, but dragged his shot past the post. Into the second period, Henderson spotted the run of McArthur, who had a shot inside the box from a tight angle and hit the side-netting. Not long later, Idowu found himself in acres of space inside the Airdrie box, but the substitute kicked the ground as he shot and the ball went well wide. Strapp received a lay off from Barjonas and had a go from just outside the area, and his effort, which left George stranded, went narrowly over the top. 66 minutes in, Airdrie found the equaliser. Henderson received the ball from Barjonas, after a brilliant move, and took a touch before volleying the ball past George, to give The Diamonds a well deserved leveller. A smart finish from Henderson, who now has 17 goals this campaign. Idowu worked the ball onto his right foot and let fly, but his effort was very well saved by Stone, who had to settle for the concession of a corner, which led to nothing. With 2 minutes of normal time remaining, Idowu worked the ball onto his left foot and had a go, but his strike went just pass the post. After 4 minutes of additional time, the referee blew the full time whistle, which was met with boos from the away end. Into the opening exchanges of the second period of extra time, Calvin got on the end of Idowu’s cross, but his effort, on the stretch, went just wide. With 5 minutes of extra time remaining, St Mirren regained the lead. Idowu got on the end of a long ball and hit the ball on the volley, which found its way past the hand of Stone. Into additional time, McMenamin found Idowu through on goal, but the forward’s effort was saved by the foot of Stone. St Mirren progress through to the Last 8 after a tight match against Championship side Airdrie, who made the Paisley outfit work for their win. Dunfermline 0-2 Airdrieonians Match Report

Dunfermline host Airdrie in the Scottish Championship as Dunfermline continue to chase promotion and Airdrie hope to avoid relegation. Dunfermline came into this one off the back of two big wins as a last minute goal meant they knocked Premiership side Hibernian out of the Scottish cup and they also handed league leaders St Johnstone their first home loss of the season. Airdrie despite their league position went on a five game undefeated run until a tight 1-0 loss against fellow strugglers Ross County but they had given themselves reason to hope under new boss Aaron Taylor-Sinclair. There was just the one change for Dunfermline from the team that beat St Johnstone, Tashan Oakley-Boothe had dropped out for captain Chris Hamilton. There were two changes for Airdrie from the team that lost that game against Ross County, Aidan Wilson and Charlie McArthur came in to replace Sean McGinty and Craig Ross. The first chance fell to Dunfermline as Andrew Tod had a free kick from around 25 yards out, however he struck the ball straight in the Airdrie wall. It would be Airdrie who took the lead as the ball somehow bounced over keeper Deniz Mehmet and into the net from a Euan Henderson free kick. Good running by Robbie Fraser as he got a cross into the box but Airdrie keeper Harry Stone was able to grab it before Zak Rudden could get on the end of it. Jamie Barjonas tried to barge his way through the Dunfermline back line until Fraser managed to get a block in and send it for a corner. A good counter attack from Airdrie stretched the Dunfermline defence and the ball fell to Charlie McArthur who couldn’t sort his feet out in time and ended up sending his effort wide of goal. A chance for Dunfermline as a recycled corner fell to Rudden and then Callumn Morrison whose curling left foot shot went just the wrong side of the post. Another good cross by Fraser on the Dunfermline left was met by the head of Andrew Tod but his header was straight into the hands of Stone Andrew Tod again got into a good position and got his low cross into Zak Rudden who missed the ball but it fell to Matty Tod and his shot was saved by Stone. The ball immediately fell to Chris Hamilton and his shot was well hit but over the bar as Dunfermline continued to look for the equaliser. Hamilton again found himself in space but his shot was poor and cannoned off his team and into the arms of Stone once again. First action of the second half was a sending off for Dunfermline as Chris Mochrie was running through on goal and was hauled back by Hamilton who gave referee Peter Stuart no choice but to send him off. Another great move by Morrison, Fraser and finally a shot by Rudden but again Stone in the Airdrie goal stops Dunfermline from getting that equaliser. A good one-two on the edge of the box from Mochrie and Charlie Telfer ends in a fairly tame shot by Telfer that was easily saved by Mehmet. A decent strike from outside the box by substitute Olly Thomas was again well saved by Harry Stone. A long ball saw Mochrie in behind again for Airdrie but he dragged his shot well wide of the post. A fantastic cross from sub Graham Carey flew straight through the penalty area and had to be knocked behind for another Dunfermline corner as they kept the pressure on Airdrie. Another chance for Dunfermline again as this time it was Kieran Ngwanya who had his effort saved by Stone. A second goal for Airdrie as substitute Lewis McGrattan scores with just under 10 minutes remaining with a fantastic strike down to the keepers right, surely wrapping up the three points for the Diamonds. One final chance for Airdrie as Lewis Strapp his a fantastic volley that bounced off the top of the net and almost capped of a great win. Dunfermline Athletic Deniz Mehmet, Jeremiah Chilokoa-Mullen (Alfons Amade, 78), Kieran Ngwenya, Chris Hamilton (sent off, 53), Charlie Gilmour, Zak Rudden (Shea Kearney, 65), Matty Tod (Olly Thomas, 65), Nurudeen Abdulai, Andrew Tod (Graham Carey, 65), Callumn Morrison, Robbie Fraser (Chris Kane, 78). Airdrieonians 1-1 Partick Thistle: Last Minute Goal Snatches Draw for Jags

Airdrieonians 1-1 Partick Thistle Henderson (70′)                           Smyth (90+4′) An injury-time Oisin Smyth strike confirmed a point for Mark Wilson’s Partick Thistle at The Albert Bartlett Stadium. Airdrieonians sit bottom of the Scottish Championship, but took an unlikely lead thanks to Euan Henderson. A long throw reached the attacker at the back post, and his low strike nestled into Josh Clarke’s net to the delight of the home support. Thistle hit back in the 94th minute to steal a point. Smyth’s strike agonisingly squirmed through Cade Melrose’s grasp in the Airdrie goal, an unfortunate moment for the young goalkeeper. The point leaves Airdrie two points adrift at the bottom of the Scottish Championship, with just one win in fourteen championship matches. Partick Thistle remain in second place, and could drop five points behind St Johnstone following their trip to Dunfermline.   Airdrieonians: Melrose, McKinnon, Wilson, McGinty, Strapp, McMaster, McGrattan, Barjonas, Gallagher, Henderson, Mochrie. Substitutes: McNeil, McStravick, Xavier-Jones, Ross, Cooper, D. Williams, C. Williams, Hastie, Chisholm. Danny Lennon Axed By Airdrieonians After 56 Days In Charge

Danny Lennon has become the latest managerial casualty as Airdrieonians have pulled the trigger on him after only 56 days following a 4-0 home defeat at the hands of Dunfermline. Danny Lennon, a seasoned manager, returned to the game in August after a 3-year hiatus, returning to Airdrieonians where he had previously spent a short interim spell in charge in 2016. However, the former League Cup-winning manager will now be on the lookout for a new job as the Airdrie club has decided to sack him after he remained winless in his 8 games in charge, with 6 defeats and 2 draws. It’s not been a good return to management for Lennon, who has failed to turn around the club’s fortunes as they remain rooted to the bottom of the Championship table, 4 points off Ross County in 9th and winless in the league this season. In his time in charge of the club, he has watched helplessly from the sidelines as his team shipped 15 goals during his tenure, only managing to score 5 goals themselves as the bad results piled up. It has been a rough time for the past season for the Airdrieonians, despite reaching the play-offs in their first season in the championship. Last season saw them needing a relegation play-off victory against Cove Rangers to secure survival. Airdrie will now be on the lookout for their third manager of the season following the highly rated Rhys McCabe’s departure earlier this season, and now Danny Lennon is being shown the exit door. Whoever comes in at the Albert Bartlett Stadium has a big task on their hands to turn the club’s fortunes around. The key things that the new man will have to sort out are the defensive frailties of the squad as well as finding the goalscoring touch as Airdrie look to retain their Championship status.
