Europa league and FA Cup success: January review at Aston Villa

One defeat so far in 2026 as we look into January for Unai Emery’s men Aston Villa 3-1 Nottingham Forest Aston Villa made a perfect start to the new year with a convincing 3-1 win over Sean Dyche’s men, wasting no time in bouncing back from a heavy 4-1 defeat against Arsenal at the Emirates earlier that week. A goal from Ollie Watkins on his 250th appearance for the club and two second-half goals from Scotland international John McGinn guided Villa to an 11th straight victory at Villa Park, their longest winning run since 1980. Crystal Palace 0-0 Aston Villa Up next was a tough away trip to Selhurst Park to face a Palace side who were undefeated against Villa in their last six encounters but were struggling themselves domestically, having not recorded a home win since the beginning of November. A frustrating goalless draw, which saw Emery’s side have fifteen shots on goal, meant Villa failed to tighten the gap to three points on Arsenal at the top of the table. Tottenham 1-2 Aston Villa (FA Cup) It was a break from league action with Villa travelling to North London as they began their FA Cup journey with an impressive 2-1 win against fellow Premier League outfit Spurs. A strong opening half saw first-half goals from Emiliano Buendia and Morgan Rogers give Villa a two-goal cushion at the break, and despite an improved display from Thomas Frank’s side in the second half, which saw Wilson Odobert pull a goal back, Villa held on to book a place in the fourth round as a home tie against Newcastle United awaits later this month. Aston Villa 0-1 Everton Villa went into this game knowing a win would see them overtake Manchester City into second place after they had fallen to a 2-0 defeat in the Manchester Derby the day before. However, they were unable to take advantage of that opportunity and instead suffered only a third defeat at Villa Park this season in what was an uninspiring performance, to say the least. Villa showed a real lack of urgency and quality in the final third for large spells, and goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez’s mistake, which led to Everton’s goal, proved to be costly in the end. Fenerbahce 0-1 Aston Villa On a more positive note, Villa would go on to secure automatic qualification for the last 16 in the Europa League with a game to spare, as they grounded out a 1-0 win over José Mourinho’s Fenerbahce, courtesy of Manchester United loanee Jadon Sancho netting his first goal for the club. Villa were perhaps unfortunate not to have won by more, having missed some big chances, and had a second goal for Jadon Sancho ruled out for offside before half-time. Newcastle 0-2 Aston Villa Not many people would have predicted Emery’s men to win either of their away matches against both Fenerbahce and Newcastle before a ball was kicked due to Villa’s injury issues, but they did exactly that. Emiliano Buendia and Ollie Watkins scored in either half to secure a first away win at St James’ Park since 2005 and ensure Villa’s strong away form in the league continued, as they would go level on points with second-placed Manchester City for the time being. Aston Villa 3-2 Red Bull Salzburg Villa would end the month with three points against German opposition Red Bull Salzburg as the league phase of the Europa League ended, with Villa already through. Villa showed resilience and character as they fought from 2-0 down to win it late on, with 19-year-old Jamaldeen Jimoh-Aloba coming off the bench to net his first senior goal for the club, as Villa ended the league phase of the Europa League unbeaten at Villa Park, and they can now look forward to the knockout stages in March.

Arsenal vs Aston Villa Match Preview

Arsenal will look to get revenge on Aston Villa when they come to the Emirates on Tuesday night. The last time these two sides met was early this month, when Aston Villa won 2-1 courtesy of a stoppage time winner from Emiliano Buendia. The last meeting between these sides in North London finished 2-2. Gabriel Martinelli and Kai Havertz scored to put The Gunners 2-0 up, but two quick-fire goals from Youri Tielemans and Ollie Watkins gave Aston Villa a point. In their last outing Arsenal beat Brighton 2-1 in North London, courtesy of a goal from their skipper Ødegaard and an own goal from Rutter. Brighton did pull a goal back in the 64th minute, but in the end, it was only a consolation. The Gunners remain top after 18 matches, but both Manchester City and Aston Villa are breathing down their necks. Manchester City sit 2 points behind in 2nd and Aston Villa only sit 3 points behind in 3rd. Aston Villa beat Chelsea 2-1 at Stamford Bridge in their last outing to extend their impressive winning run to 11. Joao Pedro gave Chelsea the lead on 37 minutes, in a half which they dominated, however, in the second period, Unai Emery’s side turned the game around. Ollie Watkins equalised in the 64th minute and scored again in the 84th minute to give Unai Emery’s side all 3 points. As per @HandofArsenal, a reliable ITK, German forward Kai Havertz has been included in the Arsenal squad to face Aston Villa tonight, a decision will be made soon on his selection for the official match day team sheet. In continuation, English defender Ben White has an ‘outside chance’ of making the squad. Polish defender Matty Cash and French midfielder Boubacar Kamara will be unavailable for selection for Aston Villa as both are suspended. Arsenal have kept the most clean sheets in the league so far this season (9), while Aston Villa rank 9th (5). Arsenal have scored the 2nd most goals so far on 33, 10 behind Manchester City, while Aston Villa sit in 6th on 5. Arsenal have won 13 and drawn 2 of their last 15 matches at the Emirates Stadium. In that time, Mikel Arteta’s side have scored 35 goals and kept 9 clean sheets. Despite that, Aston Villa have been impressive on the road in the league so far. Unai Emery’s side have won 5, drawn 2 and lost 2 of their 9 games so far. Mikel Arteta on Aston Villa: “We have a really tough match. We know their level, what they are doing, but it’s a beautiful game as well to prepare and play. “They merit to be there. Look at what they are doing and how consistent they’ve been, and what Unai has done with the club. I think they fully deserve that credit because they are doing it on the pitch where you have to show your level.” Unai Emery on Arsenal: “They signed players last summer to have two players in each position,” he stated. “They are playing and competing fantastic; they have been so, so strong at everything. How they are building the team, each year they are getting stronger and stronger. It is the biggest test we are going to face this season.”

Aston Villa 2-1 Manchester Utd: Villans tighten grip on third after Rogers double

Aston Villa 2-1 Manchester United Rogers (45′, 57′)     Cunha (45+3′) Morgan Rogers continued his sensational individual form as Aston Villa secured a 10th consecutive win in all competitions, edging out Manchester United at Villa Park. Despite Unai Emery’s side struggling to find their usual rhythm, Rogers provided the clinical edge. On the stroke of halftime, the Englishman cut inside to bend a curling effort into the far corner. The visitors briefly found a route back into the game when Matheus Cunha pounced on a Matty Cash blunder to level the scores, but the level score was short-lived. Rogers isolated Leny Yoro for the second time in the match moments later, mirroring his first-half strike with a nearly identical curled finish over Senne Lammens. The brace takes Rogers’ tally to six goals in his last six league appearances. In the opposing dugout, the pressure intensified for Ruben Amorim. Already hampered by a depleted squad, his plans were thrown into further disarray when Kobbie Mainoo withdrew with a calf injury during the warm-up. The misery was compounded just before the break when talisman Bruno Fernandes pulled up with a suspected hamstring tear. The withdrawal of the Portuguese star is worrying for his manager, whose side is looking perilously thin heading into the festive period. Victory extends Villa’s grasp on third place to 7 points over nearest rivals Chelsea, for United, they slip to two wins in eight games, in what has been an inconsistent run for Ruben Amorim’s side. Aston Villa: Martinez, Cash, Konsa, Lindelof, Maatsen (Digne 75′) Kamara (Bogarde 88′) Onana (Buendia 84′) McGinn (Guessand 84′) Tielemans, Rogers, Watkins (Malen 75′) Manchester United: Lammens, Yoro (Lacey 84′) Heaven, Shaw, Dalot, Ugarte (Zirkzee 73′) Fernandes (Martinez 46′)  Dorgu, Mount, Cunha, Sesko (Fletcher 73′)
