Chelsea 0-1 Man Utd: visitors take leap towards Champions League

Chelsea 0-1 Manchester United Cunha (43′) Matheus Cunha’s clinical first-half strike pushed a rejuvenated Manchester United side onto the cusp of Champions League football. In an edgy affair at Stamford Bridge, the pivotal touch came two minutes before the halftime break. Bruno Fernandes marauded down the right flank, delivering a low cross from the byline for Cunha to sweep home in the penalty box. The right-footed effort sailed past Robert Sanchez and into the top corner, giving the hosts another setback in what has been a challenging period on the domestic front. Chelsea were frustrated by the woodwork, seeing three different efforts crash off the crossbar. The best opportunity fell to Wesley Fofana in the second period, who latched onto Pedro Neto’s dangerous inswinging corner. But from close range, the Frenchman’s header could only find the upright. Liam Rosenior’s side are now four matches without scoring in the Premier League, and back-to-back home defeats against the Manchester clubs leave them four points outside the Champions League spots. Carrick counted on experience, with the likes of Fernandes instrumental in the narrow victory. After bouncing back from Monday’s defeat to Leeds, the Red Devils sit comfortably in 3rd place with five matches to go. Chelsea: Sanchez, Gusto (Acheampong 81′) Fofana (Chalobah 81′) Hato, Cucurella, Caicedo, Fernández (Lavia 88′) Palmer, Neto, Estavao (Garnacho 16′) Delap Manchester United: Lammens, Dalot, Mazraoui, Heaven, Shaw, Casemiro, Mainoo, Mbuemo (Zirkzee 87′) Fernandes, Cunha (Mount 81′) Sesko (Diallo 80′)

UCL Roundup: Arsenal, Liverpool Advance; City, Spurs Among Big Exits

Arsenal and Liverpool both progress into the next round of the UEFA Champions League with Manchester City, Chelsea, Newcastle and Tottenham’s European Campaign’s all coming to an end.  Here is a round-up from the Round of 16 fixtures involving the six Premier League sides: Chelsea 0-3 PSG (PSG win 8-2 on aggregate) Following a tough night in the French capital last week, it didn’t get any better in London. Chelsea did have a few good chances but were no where near clinical enough – exact opposite of PSG as they were excellent in front of goal seeing off Chelsea with three goals. Chelsea started on the wrong foot as Kvaratskhelia fired PSG ahead followed by a Barcola strike eight minutes later. Mayulu sealed the win if it wasn’t already done to keep the holders in the competition as the Premier League side exit. Manchester City 1-2 Real Madrid (Real Madrid win 5-1 on aggregate) The first leg was far from expected as Valverde’s first half hat trick gave the Madrid side a valuable lead going into the leg in Manchester. Pep’s side got off to the worst start possible which saw Bernardo Silva shown red which gave the visitors a penalty after 22 minutes where Vinicius Junior dispatched to put Real Madrid further ahead. City pulled one back before the break through Haaland but was still going to be an uphill battle. City continued to huff and puff but couldn’t find another as in the dying minutes, Vinicius Junior grabbed his second to dump Man City out of the competition. Arsenal 2-0 Bayer Leverkusen (Arsenal win 3-1 on aggregate) Arsenal got the job done on home soil after a 1-1 draw in Germany last week. The Gunners were dominant for majority of the game which paid off after 36 minutes as Eze with an outstanding strike from distance right into the back of the net gave Arteta’s side a deserved lead going into the break. Arsenal were in need of a second to see off any worries where Declan Rice made no mistake and doubled the advantage on the night to see Arsenal through following a deserved victory in North London. Liverpool 4-0 Galatasaray (Liverpool win 4-1 on aggregate) It was a disappointing night in Turkey in the first leg as Liverpool fell short as the Turkish side ran away 1-0 winners but the second leg was total opposite. Liverpool started brightly where Dominic Szoboszlai had Arne Slott’s men level on aggregate after 25 minutes. Ekitike put the hosts in front six minutes into the second period and just two minutes on they had a third as Gravenberch handed Liverpool the advantage going into the latter stages. Salah had then got in on the act with a strike just after the hour mark sure no upset was on the cards and Liverpool continue. Barcelona 7-2 Newcastle (Barcelona win 8-3 on aggregate) Following a 1-1 draw in Newcastle last week, the game began as a very exciting contest. Raphinha put Barca ahead very early on but Elanga had the Premier League side back on level terms nine minutes on. Just a few minutes later, Barcelona were ahead once again, this time through Bernal who smashed the ball home in a exciting start. 10 minutes on, Elanga netted the fourth goal of the half to draw Newcastle level once again but Barca were given a late first-half penalty following a push from Trippier where wonderkid Yamal netted into the bottom right-hand corner. It continued to go down hill as the La Liga side went onto score another 4 with Lopez on target, Raphinha scoring his second as well as Robert Lewandowski grabbing a brace to end the Newcastle dreams in style. Tottenham 3-2 Atletico Madrid (Atletico Madrid win 7-5 on aggregate) The first leg was a complete horror show as three costly errors saw Atletico go ahead by three goals within 15 minutes which saw Kinsky get subbed off after just 17 minutes which saw Tottenham go on to lose 5-2 in the Spanish capital. However, it was a much improved performance in North London but just wasn’t enough to go through. Kolo Muani had Spurs’ ahead after half-an-hour where Spurs were ahead at half-time. Atletico responded right away as former Manchester City man Jullian Alvarez equalised for the visitors. Xavi Simons regained the lead for Tottenham but Hancko cancelled out the goal on 75 minutes as Atletico refused to let Tottenham have any chance of getting back into the match. Tottenham won it late on through a Simons penalty but just wasn’t enough to win the game over both legs as Igor Tudor’s men crash out. Enzo Fernandez hints at Chelsea exit following PSG defeat

Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez last night hinted at a move away from London following Champions League exit against PSG. The London side were knocked out of the Champions League last night against the holders, PSG following an 8-2 defeat across the two legs with the midfielder suggesting a move away could be on the cards. After being asked about where Enzo will be come next season he said: When quizzed on where he would be playing next season, Fernandez said: “I don’t know. There are eight games left and the FA Cup. “There’s the World Cup and then we’ll see.” Chelsea boss Liam Rosenior stated: “I haven’t seen that” “It’s hard for me to speak on speculation after a game. I need to focus right now on the most important things, which is making sure we have the right result against Everton.” Enzo arrived to Stamford Bridge in 2023 joining from Portuguese side, Benfica for over £100million which is the second highest British transfer record just behind Isak with his move to Liverpool in the summer. The blues’ will be expecting a large sum of money should Fernandez depart so they aren’t losing out on money with only a few clubs across the world being able to afford what the Premier League would like. Enzo has played 160 times for Chelsea with 28 goals and 29 assists for the Stamford Bridge outfit where he has won 2 trophies during his time which was the UEFA Conference League and FIFA Club World Cup. Where he may go isn’t decided but a move to the Saudi League could be a potential switch or possibly a team like Bayern Munich or PSG may decide to come in for the Chelsea man.

Man in the middle for real: Referee Paul Tierney caught in the middle of Chelsea’s new huddle tradition

An awkward moment for Paul Tierney saw him stuck in the centre circle surrounded by Chelsea players before clash with Newcastle. Newcastle took three points away from Stamford Bridge, but before the match, a rather strange moment occurred. The referee for the fixture, Paul Tierney, was stuck in the middle of the new Chelsea tradition, which is huddling in the centre of the pitch. Tierney seemed to look rather confused about what was happening, as cameras beamed right onto the official during the moment. Chelsea player Cole Palmer jokingly hugged the referee before Chelsea started their huddle. On the incident, Liam Rosenior said: “My players made the decision that they wanted to be around the ball, to respect the ball and show unity and leadership. That is not my decision. That was a decision between the leadership group and the team. “We’re not being disrespectful to the opposition. If Paul had focused more on his job, which was to make the right decisions, we would have a penalty.” Rosenior is clearly not happy with the referee’s decision and plans to take further action by talking to the PGMOL.

Chelsea vs Arsenal – Match Preview

Arsenal face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night in the first leg of the EFL Cup semi-final. The last meeting between these side came in November, where it ended 1-1. Moises Caicedo was shown a red card before half-time, but Chelsea hit the front early in the second period through Trevoh Chalobah. Arsenal equalised before the hour mark through Mikel Merino but couldn’t find a winner against 10-man Chelsea. Arsenal’s recent record against Chelsea is impressive. Mikel Arteta’s men have not lost to Chelsea in their last 8 meetings, the last time Chelsea won a match in this fixture came back in August 2021. Chelsea come into this fixture off the back of a 5-1 win against English Championship outfit Charlton in Liam Rosenior’s first game in charge of Chelsea. However, Chelsea haven’t beaten Premier League opposition in their last 5 attempts, drawing 3 and losing 2. Arsenal come into this fixture off the back of a 4-1 win against Championship outfit Portsmouth. Since losing to Aston Villa in early December, The Gunners have gone on an unbeaten run, winning 6 and drawing 2, with one of those draws coming against Crystal Palace in the EFL Cup, where they won on penalties. The hosts kicked off their EFL Cup campaign with a 2-1 win in Lincoln. Tyrique George and Facundo Buonanotte got the goals. In the following round, Chelsea beat Wolves 4-3. Andrey Santos, Tyrique George, Estevao and Jamie Gittens all got on the scoresheet. In the quarter final, The Blues beat English League One outfit Cardiff City 3-1. Alejandro Garnacho scared a brace and Pedro Neto also scored. Mikel Arteta’s side kicked off their EFL Cup campaign with a 2-0 win against Port Vale. Eberechi Eze and Leandro Trossard got the goals. In the following round, Arsenal beat Brighton 2-0 in North London. Ethan Nwaneri and Bukayo Saka got the goals. And in the quarter-final, Arsenal beat Crystal Palace 8-7 on penalties after a 1-1 draw. Ecuador midfielder Moises Caicedo will miss the first leg of this semi-final through suspension. Chelsea may also be without Cole Palmer. The 23-year-old is reportedly likely to miss the first leg due to a chronic groin injury. Arsenal ITK Hand of Arsenal confirmed that both Leandro Trossard and William Saliba were both rested against Portsmouth and defender Cristhian Mosquera is closing in on a return. Liam Rosenior on Arsenal: “Arsenal are good at everything. They’re a good team. You have to manage your 1% to be as good a team as you can, to win in as many different ways as possible. “I respect them, and I think they’ll respect us because we’re a good team as well. They’re a team who are very good without the ball. “They have a really, really clear idea of the way they want to play with the ball. And on top of that, they’re very well-organised with good deliveries on set-plays. That’s what you want to be if you want to be successful.” Mikel Arteta on Arsenal’s win against Portsmouth: “It’s always tough to go into these places, especially in the manner that we started the game, conceding the early goal, but we managed to turn things around, so I’m very happy. “[Making changes] is always tricky. You lack that cohesion; certain players as well haven’t played that many minutes, but a lot of positives to take from the game, apart from the win.”

Who is Liam Rosenior?

Chelsea have today announced the appointment of new manager Liam Rosenior. The 42-year-old arrives in West London on a five-and-a-half-year deal replacing the outgoing Enzo Maresca. This will be Rosenior’s first venture into Premier League management, arriving from Ligue 1 side Strasbourg, who are under the same ownership group as Chelsea. The move has thereby been met with controversy from Strasbourg fans protesting their multi-club ownership structure. The French side currently sit 7th in Ligue 1 and topped the league phase of the UEFA Conference League. Rosenior also led Strasbourg to a 7th place finish last season. Prior to coaching in France, Rosenior was in charge of Hull City, where he was dismissed narrowly missing out on play-offs. Interestingly, Rosenior worked with current Chelsea forward Liam Delap during his time at Hull, whilst also coaching current Chelsea midfielder Andrey Santos last season at Strasbourg. Much has been made on Chelsea’s transfer strategy in recent years, but it is becoming clear that Todd Boehly and the Chelsea higher-ups are in favour of younger coaches with Maresca also taking charge in his early 40s. According to Transfermarkt, Rosenior favours a 3-4-2-1 formation, a complete switch from the 4-2-3-1 the team will be used to. But Chelsea fans will hope that the club’s return to a back three will come with the successes brought by both Antonio Conte and Thomas Tuchel. As a player, Rosenior played as a right-back for clubs like Brighton and Hull City. He has also been on record earlier this season saying he is a fan of Manchester United when he shared his admiration for Sir Alex Ferguson ahead of Strasbourg’s clash with Aberdeen. It is yet to be confirmed whether Rosenior will be in the dugout for Wednesday’s trip to Craven Cottage or if he will first take charge during Chelsea’s Saturday night clash away to Charlton in the FA Cup. Either way, Rosenior will have big shoes to fill, being tasked to replace the man who led Chelsea to the UEFA Conference League and the FIFA Club World Cup titles.

Chelsea have announced Liam Rosenior as Enzo Maresca’s replacement in the Stamford Bridge dugout. Rosenior arrives from Ligue 1 side Strasbourg, who are under the same ownership group as the West London side. Rosenior departs France having guided his team to finish at top of the UEFA Conference League phase whilst also sitting 7th in France’s top flight. Prior to Strasbourg, the Englishman started his managerial career with Hull City, where he was sacked after narrowly missing out on the play-offs. Rosenior would then take over from outgoing Patrick Viera at Strasbourg. In his first interview with the club, Rosenior said: “I am extremely humbled and honoured to be appointed Head Coach of Chelsea Football Club. To be entrusted with this role means the world to me and I want to thank all involved for the opportunity and faith in undertaking this job. I will give everything to bring the success this club deserves. ‘I believe deeply in teamwork, unity, togetherness and working for one another, and those values will be at the heart of everything we do. They will be the foundation of our success. ‘I am excited to work with this extremely talented group of players and staff, to build strong connections on and off the pitch, and to create an environment where everyone feels united and driven by the same goal. ‘There is a real hunger to win, and I will give everything, every single day, to help this team compete and win at the very highest level to make everyone connected and proud to be a part of Chelsea Football Club. ‘I want our fans to be proud of who we are and what we represent in every single game that we play. They are the soul of this enormous, historic and huge football club. ‘I cannot wait to meet you all. I cannot wait to get started.” The 42-year-old coach has signed a contract until 2032. Chelsea make the short trip to Fulham tomorrow where it is unknown if Rosenior will take charge yet. If not, Chelsea have another short trip to Charlton on Saturday in the FA Cup, where it is likely the Englishman would be in the dugout.
