Sunderland 1-0 Tottenham: Ze Zerbi begins on wrong foot with a defeat to Sunderland

Tottenham make it 14 games without a win as relegation fears strengthen as a second half strike by Mukiele ensures three-points for Sunderland. Tottenham come in as they fear of relegation with 13 games without a win after dropping into relegation on Friday night as West Ham defeated Wolves to leap-frog Spurs’. Sunderland who are pushing for Europe defeated their rivals Newcastle 2-1 last time out look to get yet again. Tottenham are in dire need of victory should they get out of the bottom three. As the game begun, Richarlison had an early small chance, a first time strike from just inside the box which was collected calmly by Roefs in the Sunderland goal. Sunderland moments later took a brilliant corner by Ex-Arsenal man, Xhaka with his corner being tipped over the bar by Kinsky who has been heavily criticized of late. Brobbey had a chance from close range with his header going just over the bar following some very good passing prior to the chance. On the 20 minute mark, Tottenham were awarded a spot kick following a potential foul on Kolo Muani but after a VAR check, the penalty was chopped off which was simply, the correct decision. A free-kick from far out, Xhaka with the ball towards the box but Mukiele missing connection as it goes out for a goal-kick. Xhaka with the best chance so far as a throw by O’Nien which was brilliantly headed away but only as far as the Sunderland captain who smashes the ball goal bound but fires just wide of target. The hosts had a perfect chance to go ahead with a free-kick on the edge of the box as Xhaka blasted a ball well over into the stands. Just before the break, Xhaka whipped a ball into the box where Brobbey met but a brilliant stop by Kinsky denying Sunderland the lead right on the stroke of half-time. Roefs then quickly denied Spurs the opener as Roefs denied Solanke giving Spurs’ the lead which went out for a corner. Going into the second half, Richarlison was running through to try and strike home but some crucial defending by O’Nien prevented a Tottenham opener. Richarlison had another chance just before the hour mark but a weak and tame effort making it a simple safe by Roefs for Sunderland. Sunderland took the lead after the hour mark, Mukiele with a darting run and unleashed a strike from distance which deflected off Van de Veen and found its way into the back of the net to build more pressure onto the London side. Going into the final stages, Sunderland looked more likely to get the next goal but a massive 10 minutes to come in terms of Tottenham’s season as they fight to escape relegation. Rigg had a chance from outside the box after 82 minutes but his effort being well blocked to deny a second. Major claims late into the game as Brobbey felt he was nudged but referee Rob Jones was having none of it with VAR agreeing, no penalty. Moments later, Sunderland had a huge chance for a second but Udogie doing brilliant to clear the ball off the line to deny Sunderland the second and to deny a tap in. Porro wasn’t far off to equalise late on as a powerful strike was tipped over by Roefs to deny Tottenham a way back into the game. Sunderland scraped past struggling Tottenham at the Stadium of Light as Tottenham remain the bottom three as their relegation chances continue as that is now 14 games without a win and a defeat for Ze Zerbi on his debut where things must change if they are to avoid the drop. Next up for Sunderland is a trip to Villa Park next Sunday with Tottenham facing Brighton next Saturday evening with Ze Zerbi facing his former club as Spurs look to steer away from relegation. Roberto De Zerbi in negotiations with Spurs to become next manager

A disastrous season for Spurs is in urgent need of a helping hand, and Roberto De Zerbi is in talks to become that man. Following Igor Tudor’s mutual exit yesterday, Spurs are now in desperate need of a turnaround to save themselves from potential relegation. Igor Tudor’s reign wasn’t pleasant for Spurs fans to say the least. The Croatian suffered five defeats and lasted 44 days. And after the recent defeat to relegation rivals Nottingham Forrest, it was the inevitable Tudor wouldn’t manage the club again. Tottenham are now just one point away from the relegation drop and only have seven wins to their name all season, with seven matches remaining. However, former Brighton and Marseille coach Roberto De Zerbi, is now in talks to become the man to keep Spurs afloat in the Premier League. De Zerbi took Brighton to their highest finish ever in Premier League history, breaking records and finishing 6th, taking the club to their first European competition. Something that former Spurs interim boss Tudor has never came across. Which has now resulted in Tottenham fans crying out loud for a manager with that vital Premier League experience. If De Zerbi is appointed, will he be able to steady the ship and keep Tottenham Hotspur playing Premier League football next season?

UCL Roundup: Arsenal, Liverpool Advance; City, Spurs Among Big Exits

Arsenal and Liverpool both progress into the next round of the UEFA Champions League with Manchester City, Chelsea, Newcastle and Tottenham’s European Campaign’s all coming to an end.  Here is a round-up from the Round of 16 fixtures involving the six Premier League sides: Chelsea 0-3 PSG (PSG win 8-2 on aggregate) Following a tough night in the French capital last week, it didn’t get any better in London. Chelsea did have a few good chances but were no where near clinical enough – exact opposite of PSG as they were excellent in front of goal seeing off Chelsea with three goals. Chelsea started on the wrong foot as Kvaratskhelia fired PSG ahead followed by a Barcola strike eight minutes later. Mayulu sealed the win if it wasn’t already done to keep the holders in the competition as the Premier League side exit. Manchester City 1-2 Real Madrid (Real Madrid win 5-1 on aggregate) The first leg was far from expected as Valverde’s first half hat trick gave the Madrid side a valuable lead going into the leg in Manchester. Pep’s side got off to the worst start possible which saw Bernardo Silva shown red which gave the visitors a penalty after 22 minutes where Vinicius Junior dispatched to put Real Madrid further ahead. City pulled one back before the break through Haaland but was still going to be an uphill battle. City continued to huff and puff but couldn’t find another as in the dying minutes, Vinicius Junior grabbed his second to dump Man City out of the competition. Arsenal 2-0 Bayer Leverkusen (Arsenal win 3-1 on aggregate) Arsenal got the job done on home soil after a 1-1 draw in Germany last week. The Gunners were dominant for majority of the game which paid off after 36 minutes as Eze with an outstanding strike from distance right into the back of the net gave Arteta’s side a deserved lead going into the break. Arsenal were in need of a second to see off any worries where Declan Rice made no mistake and doubled the advantage on the night to see Arsenal through following a deserved victory in North London. Liverpool 4-0 Galatasaray (Liverpool win 4-1 on aggregate) It was a disappointing night in Turkey in the first leg as Liverpool fell short as the Turkish side ran away 1-0 winners but the second leg was total opposite. Liverpool started brightly where Dominic Szoboszlai had Arne Slott’s men level on aggregate after 25 minutes. Ekitike put the hosts in front six minutes into the second period and just two minutes on they had a third as Gravenberch handed Liverpool the advantage going into the latter stages. Salah had then got in on the act with a strike just after the hour mark sure no upset was on the cards and Liverpool continue. Barcelona 7-2 Newcastle (Barcelona win 8-3 on aggregate) Following a 1-1 draw in Newcastle last week, the game began as a very exciting contest. Raphinha put Barca ahead very early on but Elanga had the Premier League side back on level terms nine minutes on. Just a few minutes later, Barcelona were ahead once again, this time through Bernal who smashed the ball home in a exciting start. 10 minutes on, Elanga netted the fourth goal of the half to draw Newcastle level once again but Barca were given a late first-half penalty following a push from Trippier where wonderkid Yamal netted into the bottom right-hand corner. It continued to go down hill as the La Liga side went onto score another 4 with Lopez on target, Raphinha scoring his second as well as Robert Lewandowski grabbing a brace to end the Newcastle dreams in style. Tottenham 3-2 Atletico Madrid (Atletico Madrid win 7-5 on aggregate) The first leg was a complete horror show as three costly errors saw Atletico go ahead by three goals within 15 minutes which saw Kinsky get subbed off after just 17 minutes which saw Tottenham go on to lose 5-2 in the Spanish capital. However, it was a much improved performance in North London but just wasn’t enough to go through. Kolo Muani had Spurs’ ahead after half-an-hour where Spurs were ahead at half-time. Atletico responded right away as former Manchester City man Jullian Alvarez equalised for the visitors. Xavi Simons regained the lead for Tottenham but Hancko cancelled out the goal on 75 minutes as Atletico refused to let Tottenham have any chance of getting back into the match. Tottenham won it late on through a Simons penalty but just wasn’t enough to win the game over both legs as Igor Tudor’s men crash out. Champions League debut disaster for Antonin Kinsky sees him substituted after 17 minutes

Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky was subbed off after just 17 minutes on his Champions League debut in a 5-2 defeat at Atletico Madrid. The young goalkeeper had a horror start in goal, conceding three goals in the space of 15 minutes. A horrendous season for Spurs just got a whole lot worse, as they seen their Champions League hopes most likely disappear in a 5-2 defeat to Atlético Madrid. And it was goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky, who seen three of they five goals go past him in the first 15 minutes of the match. A slip and slide disaster from Kinsky and defender Micky van de Ven, led to the errors for the first three goals. It was the young Czech goalkeeper’s first appearance for Spurs since October. Alongside that, his Champions League debut in a knockout clash with Spanish giants Atlético Madrid, which sparked attention on why Igor Tudor chose him for such an important fixture. Moments after Julian Alvarez made it three, Igor Tudor went to his bench to remove Kinsky. Following the substitution, Tudor did not acknowledge the young goalkeeper who had his head in his hands, following what was a disastrous 17 minutes. Speaking on TNT Sports, former Spurs goalkeeper Joe Hart said: “He’s had a bad 14 minutes, there’s absolutely no getting away from it. “Even the stadium is feeling sorry for him. You see Tudor doesn’t even acknowledge his goalie. If that’s man management, I’m flabbergasted.” Tudor’s horror start now leaves questions about his future, and with no win since being appointed, many supporters have already had enough of the former Juventus manager.

Too Big to go Down? The Ten Biggest Clubs to Suffer Relegation

Tottenham Hotspur’s chances of relegation from the English Premier League increased after a midweek home 3-1 defeat to Crystal Palace to put the Europa League holders just one point above the drop zone. An injury plagued squad last season managed by Ange Postecoglou finished 17th, but twelve points above 18th placed Leicester in a campaign that never threatened the North London club with relegation. However this year, relegation is a stark reality for the side now managed by Igor Tudor, with many suggesting Spurs falling would go down as the most shocking relegation of the Premier League era. Here are ten clubs who were relegated from their respective divisions that evidently were not too big to go down. 1. Hearts & Hibs, 2013/14 Both teams which share Edinburgh suffered relegation in the same season, with Hearts’ suffering a 15 point deduction at the beginning of the campaign that actually kept their city rivals from going down automatically after finishing just 13 points behind them. Hibernian had the opportunity to stay up via the relegation play-offs, but would lose the second leg at home 2-0 to Hamilton Academical, leading to a penalty shoot-out defeat to consign both clubs to a season in the Championship shared with Rangers. Hearts bounced back first time of asking, but it took Hibernian three attempts to climb back up.    2. Atletico Madrid, 1999/2000 Spanish giants Atletico Madrid were brought down to Segunda División in 2000 alongside Sevilla, despite reaching the Copa del Rey Final in the same season. It was the capital city side’s first relegation in 66 years, having won the top-flight and cup double in 1996. It took Atleti two attempts to achieve promotion, and they haven’t looked back since.    3. Manchester United, 1973/74 It is inconceivable to imagine Manchester United in the second tier of English football, never mind a mere six years after winning the European Cup, yet that was the case back in the 70s. They had lost their talented trio of George Best, Bobby Charlton and Denis Law since then, with the ‘Lawman’ scoring at Old Trafford on the final day of the season for neighbours Manchester City after their fate had been sealed.    4. River Plate, 2011 One of the finest teams outside of Europe, Argentines River Plate were relegated for the only time in their history in 2011. The Argentinean relegation system is complicated, with the Buenos Aires side going down through a relegation play-off based off of their point average over the last three seasons, a system brought in to protect the bigger clubs. They lost the play-off 3-1 on aggregate to Cordoba.    5. FC Schalke 04, 2020/21 & 2022/23 Champions league regulars FC Schalke 04 suffered two relegations either side of their 2. Bundesliga promotion. Having possessed a side with quality such as Raul, Manuel Neuer and Klass-Jan Huntelaar in the 2010s, the Gelsenkirchen outfit were relegated during the COVID-19 season amid financial trouble and would go back down in their first season back up. After flirting with another relegation to the third tier, they are now top of the 2. Bundesliga with Edin Dzeko leading the line.    6. Manchester City, 1995/96 & 1997/98 It is fair to say their fortunes have changed now, but the blue side of Manchester long lived in the shadows of Manchester United, going down to the Championship the same year United won the Premier League in 1996, over a decade before their financial takeover. More shocking however was their relegation to League One just two years later, a fate which could be suffered by former Premier League winners Blackburn Rovers or Leicester City this season. Manchester City could join them, depending on the result of their court case.   7. Juventus, 2006 Juventus were relegated under nefarious circumstances amid the Calciopoli scandal which rocked Italian football. Alleged to be involved in a match-fixing scandal which remains contentious today, Juve were brought down to Serie B and stripped of two titles in the mid 2000s. They returned at the first time of asking, keeping hold of star players such as Alessandro Del Piero and Pavel Nedved, despite beginning with a points deduction.    8. Villarreal, 2011/12 The yellow submarine suffered the ignominy of relegation after one disastrous campaign coming after consistent European showings. It paved the way for exits for Giuseppe Rossi and Borja Valero, and their new manager brought in to guide them back to La Liga passed away from a heart attack the same day he was appointed. Villarreal would come back upon their second try, and would win the Europa League in 2021 after an 11-10 penalty shootout win over Manchester United.    9. Leeds United, 2003/04 For fans of a certain age, Leeds and the Championship seems normal. However, their relegation in 2004 after financial mismanagement came just three years after the club reached the UEFA Champions League semi-finals. The Elland Road side would not return to the top-flight until 2020, where they have been a bit of a yo-yo club since.    10. SSC Napoli, 2000/01 & 2003/04 From the Scudetti won in the era of Diego Armando Maradona in 1987 ad 1990, to the Scudetti won by Khvicha Kvartskhelia and Scott McTominay in 2023 and 2025, the Naples side fell as far down as Serie C in between. First suffering relegation to Serie B in 2001, financial woes dragged the Napolitanos to the third tier in 2004, recording attendances as high as 51,000 even at their lowest. They made their way back into the top division in 2007 alongside Juventus and Genoa.    Have we missed anyone out? And where would a Tottenham relegation rank in this list if the once unthinkable now slightly probable scenario occurs this season?

Tottenham 1-4 Arsenal: Post-Match Reaction

Arsenal extend their lead at the top of the Premier League to 5 points with an emphatic victory over North London rivals Tottenham. Igor Tudor: “Now in this moment, the team is full of problems. The only key is to work on the training day by day and be humble. We need to be more aggressive – we need to be more compact. These are the keys. You understand the gap with the mental sharpness of one team and other teams. This is a thing we need to change. I saw players available to do this, but we need more time to do this. Thinking about relegation doesn’t bring you anything to anybody.” Mikel Arteta on Eberechi Eze: “He was upset, even with me, because I didn’t play him the other day from the beginning, and some of the decisions that I made. “I just have to understand how we’re going to get the best out of him now. I could see that he wanted to prove something.” On the key to Arsenal’s win: “The attitude. Again, how you approach thing and that’s a decision that you have to make. You can feel sorry for yourself, you can look at it, oh, at this stage, I mean, when we’re all kids, we dream to play these kind of games. So when we have the possibility to do that, just do it in a manner that recognises the opportunity that we have to be where we are.” On Declan Rice: “When you talk about attitude… What Declan has done today. I mean, he can make an error, the way he played afterwards. That’s attitude. That’s personality, and courage, and to stand up in a difficult moment.” Viktor Gyökeres: “We can do even better, I’m sure. I was involved a lot. When you get to know the players around you better, it makes a difference. “I always try to come in with my attributes and help the team.” Eberechi Eze: “Today it worked out, thanks God.” “Why do I always score against Spurs? I try to score against everyone but it always seems to work against them.”

Igor Tudor Takes the Reigns at Tottenham

Croatian coach Igor Tudor has taken interim charge of Tottenham Hotspur after Thomas Frank was sacked earlier this week. Frank left the club in 16th place just five points above the relegation places, leaving Spurs with no choice but to sack their Danish manager. Tottenham were looking for a coach with a track record of producing an instant turnaround in form and Tudor does have previous experience of doing exactly that. Tudor, who got 55 caps for Croatia as a player, took charge of both Lazio and Juventus at similar stages of the last two seasons and was able to turn their fortunes around quickly. His latest stint as a head coach was at Juventus after finishing fourth at the end of last season he was given a two-year contract, however was sacked four months later. Tudor does have plenty of coaching experience, since 2013 he’s worked at clubs such as Galatasaray, Udinese and Marseille along with the aforementioned Lazio and Juventus. It’s a tough start to life at Spurs for the Croatian as his first game is the North London derby against Arsenal at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium on 22nd February. He also has a trip to Anfield to play Liverpool and the first leg of the Champions League last 16 tie within his first five games in charge. Spurs will be hoping Tudor can produce what he has in Serie A over the past few years and pull them out of the position they’re in before they fall into serious contention of relegation. ‘Spurs are not a big club!’ – Ange Postecoglou lambasts former club

Ange Postecoglou slams Tottenham’s ambitions as a football club following the sacking of Thomas Frank.  Frank was sacked after eight months in charge and the club currently find themselves 16th in the league table and five points off the relegation zone. The Lilywhites have yet to win a game in 2026 and are on the look out for an interim manager until the end of the season. One man who knows the London-based club all too well is former boss Postecoglou who guided them to Europa League glory last season. Before the Australian arrived, Spurs hadn’t won a trophy in a staggering 17 years and despite the success, the 60-year-old was sacked due to the club finishing 17th in the league. The former Celtic boss appeared on The Overlap and didn’t hold back in regards to Spurs’ stature as a football club: “You know when you walk into Tottenham, what you see everywhere is ‘To Dare Is To Do’ it’s everywhere, and yet their actions are almost the antithesis of that. “It’s a real curious in terms of understanding what are they trying build. What are they? “They’ve obviously built an unbelievable stadium, unbelievable training facilities but when you look at expenditure, particularly in their wages structure – they’re not a big club. “I saw that when we were trying to sign players and we weren’t in the market for those players.” Postecoglou continued and believes former club aren’t one of the ‘big boys’ and could never see them spending big money in the transfer market like other big clubs: “Tottenham as a club were saying ‘we’re one of the big boys’ and the reality is I don’t think they are in terms of my experience over the last two years. “You know when Arsenal spent £100 million on Declan Rice I don’t see Tottenham doing that.” Postecoglou was sacked by Forest earlier this season after failing to win any of his eight games in charge. The former Australia manager currently works as a member of UEFA’s Technical Observer Panel.

Thomas Frank Sacked as Tottenham Hotspur Manager

Tottenham Hotspur have announced that manager Thomas Frank has been sacked after just eight months in charge. Frank was given the position in June 2025 after Ange Postecoglou was sacked just weeks after winning the Europa League with Spurs. Frank leaves the club in 16th position in the Premier League with 29 points after 26 games, far away from where the club expect themselves to be. Despite some good results in Europe and wins over Manchester City and Everton, there have just been too many poor results to keep Frank in the job for the Spurs board. What happened to be the final straw for the club board was last night’s 1-2 home loss to Newcastle United. In a statement the club said: “results and performances have led the Board to conclude that a change at this point in the season is necessary.” As we head into the last few months an interim as the club looks for the next man to try and make them a force in the Premier League again. Early favourites to take over include Robert de Zerbi who has today left French club Marseille, John Heitinga currently head coach of Ajax, and sensationally Mauricio Pochettino is tipped to make a potential return after spending five years there from 2014-2019.

Hearts Youngster Wilson set for Premier League Move

Tottenham Hotspur have agreed to take James Wilson on loan from Hearts till the end of the season, with an option to buy. The 18-year-old managed six goals in thirty-three appearances last season, but has fallen down the pecking order under Derek McInnes, featuring just six times. Arsenal were reported to offer similar interest, offering a trial for the youngster, but Hearts have instead opted for Wilson to join Thomas Frank’s side. The Premier League interest took McInnes by surprise, he told Sky Sports Scotland earlier this week. “He’s been restricted with minutes this season. It’s tough to get into the first team at this age,” “Would we see the benefit of a loan? Yes, to get some minutes. But this one was a wee bit left-field.”
