First half collapse sees St Johnstone fall to Dundee

Venue: McDiarmid Park                                                     Date: 05/01/25                                                          Time: 15:00pm   St Johnstone’s early collapse saw Dundee come out comfortable winners and leave the Perth side eight points adrift at the bottom of the table. Just three minutes into play Josh Rae flailed as he jumped to catch a lofted free kick ball, leaving Simon Murray to put the visitors on the front foot. In the tenth minute disaster struck again when St Johnstone were guilty of not clearing from a set piece allowing the ball to fall into Seb Palmer-Houlden’s feet, the 21 year old making no mistake to double his side’s lead. Folding like a deck of cards on a windy day, Simo Valakari’s men found themselves three down just twelve minutes later, Lyall Cameron finishing Mulligan’s pass into the box which could have been finished by Oluwaseun Adewumi had he not missed the ball entirely. Making two substitutions before the half hour mark, the manager look to turn things around but would earn no more than a consolation goal courtesy of Josh McPake’s long range effort. Nicky Clark came close to getting the first for the home side but could not get enough purchase on Aaron Essel’s cross as the ball skimmed over his head. Continuing in their struggles to find the target, Benjamin Kimpioka could not add a finish to his tricky footwork, ending the game goalless for the fifth time in a row before Adama Sidibeh failed to do better with his own effort. Much improved in the second half, Clark at least forced a save from Trevor Carson who endured one of his more comfortable evenings in a Dundee shirt. Palmer-Houlden probed for a second but was denied by a strong hand from Rae. Attendance: 5,246 Line-Ups: St Johnstone (4-2-3-1): J. Rae, A. Raymond (A. Essel 28’), B. Mikulic, J. Sanders, D. Simon Murray Double Sees Dundee Seal 3 Points in Paisley

Dundee recover from Boxing Day County mauling with a 2-1 win over St Mirren. The home side began the game brightly with Roland Idowu testing ex-Saints goalkeeper Trevor Carson after only 5 minutes. The winger continued to make menacing, bursting runs forward and flashed the ball across the face of goal but there were no takers. Dundee continued to battle but were forced into 2 early changes due to injuries to Jordan McGhee and Billy Koumetio. They were replaced with Ethan Ingram and Sean Kelly after 20 minutes. From here the away side turned the tide of the game and the St Mirren defence found themselves under pressure. Ellery Balcombe spilled a cross from Oluwaseun Adewumi and if not for a combination of blocks from Alex Gogic and Marcus Fraser, St Mirren would have found themselves 1-0 down. However it was not long until Simon Murray broke the deadlock. A cross from Josh Mulligan met the head of Murray who headed the away side in front just before the half hour mark. Mulligan’s crosses would continue to test the St Mirren back line and if not for double, point-blank saves from Balcombe they would have been in further trouble. The windy conditions made this a difficult contest but just before half time Marcus Fraser made a driving run forward before finding Elvis Bwomono. The Ugandan defender whipped an inviting cross across the 6 yard line which Toyosi Olusanya met with a diving header, levelling the game. Half Time: St Mirren 1-1 Dundee Chances at both ends gave a false impression of the way this half would go. Olusanya was sent through on goal by Idowu but his shot was blasted into the side netting. Straight up the other end and Seb Palmer-Houlden had his volley tipped over by Balcombe. From here the game began to get scrappy with neither side managing to grasp a foothold in the game. St Mirren turned to their bench hoping to spark some well needed life into the game, introducing target men Jonah Ayunga and Mikael Mandron to the fold. It was, however, Dundee that began to pile on the pressure and with 25 minutes to go Simon Murray got his second. The hosts failed to clear a free kick delivery before the ball was sent back into the box by Ryan Astley and Murray nodded the ball off of the crossbar and into the back of the net. The rest of the half was stop-start and fizzled out with no clear cut chances. As St Mirren pushed for the equaliser, nothing would fall for them in the final third and stoppage time wouldn’t come to the rescue this time. Full Time: St Mirren 1-2 Dundee Both sides look ahead to tough matches to kick off their New Year. On Thursday, St Mirren make the short journey along the M77 to face Kilmarnock and Dundee play host to the Dundee derby, aiming to burst the bubble of their city rivals. Teams: St Mirren: Balcombe, Iacovitti, Gogic, Fraser (C), Bwomono (Penman, 82”), John, Phillips, Smyth (Boyd-Munce, 75”), Kiltie (Mooney, 75”), Olusanya (Mandron, 63”), Idowu (Ayunga, 63”) Dundee: Carson (C), Astley, McGhee (Kelly, 22”), Mulligan, Cameron, Adewumi (Tiffoney, 90”), Murray, Robertson, Koumetio (Ingram, 22”), Palmer-Holden, Sylla Referee: Nick Walsh Attendance: 6798

County down Dundee for first away win in 15 months

Venue: Dens Park                                                                 Date: 26/12/24                                                          Time: 15:00   An inspired Noah Chilvers put Dundee to the sword to ensure a first away win for Ross County since September 2023.  Chilvers made his first goal for the club count with a pinpoint finish from outside the box.  Dundee’s sloppiness in possession made their attempts at a comeback all the more difficult as Mo Sylla was caught out by Chilvers to put Josh Nisbet in on goal and stretch their advantage.  With the game already lost, the home side could not keep their discipline, Josh Mulligan’s foul on Nisbet giving County a penalty with Jordan White making no mistake from the spot.  Chilvers had attempted the miraculous in trying to catch Trevor Carson off his line from halfway but it could only land on the roof of the net.  Mulligan was the first to make Ross Laidlaw work with as the County keeper parried the effort to keep the visitors at bay. Ronan Hale had come close to adding a second but Carson did well to deny the striker.  An afternoon of attempted wonder goals continued with Sylla, whose volley from outside the box dragged just wide.  Unfortunately for Tony Docherty his side spent most of the game defending for their lives, Ryan Astley put his body on the line to keep Ryan Leak out. The result means 10th place County sit just a point behind Dundee.   Attendance: 5, 207 Line-Ups:  Dundee: T. Carson, B. Koumetio, A. Portales (S. Kelly 46′), R. Astley, J. McGhee (F. Cerny finish rescues wasteful Rangers against Dundee

Venue: Ibrox                                                                        Date: 21/12/24                                                             Time: 15:00   Vlaclav Cerny’s second half finish saw Rangers defeat Dundee to leapfrog Aberdeen into second.  Despite a dominant performance which saw the home side hit the crossbar four times, it was only Danilo’s pass to unleash Cerny on an impressive run and dribble past Trevor Carson that proved the difference.  Ianis Hagi was the first to strike the woodwork, his thundering effort bouncing off the top of the bar. Captain James Tavernier was next, his free kick from distance agonisingly close to give Philippe Clement an opener as Dundee clung on for life.  Cerny came close before the break, Hamilton able to keep the midfielder out.    Rangers should have come away from this fixture comfortable winners but for Hamza Igamane being kept out by Jordan McGhee on the line and hitting the crossbar with a point blank effort later on.  They were almost punished for their profligacy in front of goal but Finlay Robertson could not convert.  Attendance: 47,208 Line-ups: L. Kelly, Jefté, R. Pröpper, D. Sterling, J. Tavernier (c), I. Hagi (R. Yilmaz 84’), N. Raskin, M. Diomande, H. Igamane (C. Dessers 84’), Danilo (N. Bajrami 62’), V. Černý (R. Shankland’s Dundee double lifts Hearts off bottom of the table

Hearts 2 – 0 Dundee Lawrence Shankland ended his goalless drought to help his side to strong win over Dundee. Two and half months after his last goal, the Hearts captain’s header arced over a static Jon McCracken and doubled his tally just ten minutes later. Musa Drammeh had a chance of his own by he could only send Blair Spittal’s cross wide in the first half. Dundee’s Oluwaseun Adewumi could not build on his impressive midweek outing against Motherwell, sending one of his side’s few opportunities sky high. Antonio Portales also unable to find the target with his header. McCracken was granted a get out of jail free card when his mishit clearance fell into the path of Drammeh, but was ruled marginally offside. Attendance: 18,737 Line-ups: Hearts: C. Gordon, J. Motherwell collapse sees Dundee score three in seven minutes

A Lyall Cameron double helped Dundee secure an important three points to move into the top six as Motherwell fell to another defeat. The result means the visitors have now lost three in a row and sit only one point above seventh place St. Mirren. Dundee opened the scoring after Oluwaseun Adewumi curled a shot past Aston Oxborough after just fourteen minutes in. Motherwell levelled only five minutes later when Apostolos Stamatelopoulos bundled the ball in as the contest looked set to be a back on forth for the remaining time. Unfortunately that was as good as it got for Stuart Kettlewell’s men as Scott Tiffoney regained the lead just after the hour mark, finishing a rapid counter. Within seven minutes Motherwell had conceded two more as a deflection allowed Lyall Cameron to stretch his side’s advantage Cameron then grabbed his second, truly putting the game to bed, Motherwell left to rue a lack of intensity on the counter. The side had chances but were unable to get the better of Jon McCracken, who has looked much improved since a difficult start to the season. Dundee control ball as much as scoreboard One of the lesser heralded sides of the league this season, Tony Docherty may have felt his side had a point to prove. They served all three on this occasion, putting to bed a Motherwell side that sat above them until tonight. Looking comfortable on the ball and with the lion’s share of possession, the home side were able to stifle any momentum the visitors attempted to build. Adewumi, Cameron and Tiffoney were terrific on the night but they are supported by the engine that is Mo Sylla, whose ability to keep the ball under pressure has been key to their build up. A mere blip or time to worry? At the start of the season, being sat in top sixth entering December would have been a position worth shouting about given the calibre of the league. However after a third loss in a row, some cracks are beginning to show in this Motherwell side. Not simply the defeats but the way they have gone down all too easily, with nine goals conceding in their last three games, which including a hiding at home to Hibs at the weekend. Perhaps too much pr With five more games to come in December, with two of those against the old firm, Kettlewell will need to get his side firing sooner rather than later. Attendance: 5,381 Line-Ups: Dundee: J. McCracken, B. Koumetio (S. Kelly 85’), A. Portales, R. Astley, S. Tiffoney (F. Roberston 69’), M. Sylla, J. McGhee, J. Mulligan, O. Adewumi (J. Vetro 90’), L. Fair’s fair as Dundee hold Kilmarnock in even contest

Kilmarnock 1 – 1 Dundee Dundee remain in hot pursuit of a top six finish after holding an out of sorts Kilmarnock to a draw in an even contest. Lyall Cameron put the visitors in front after blasting home a clearance that had a landed at his feet. Tony Docherty will be disappointed his side could only hold onto the lead for three minutes when teenager Wales finished a clever lay off from Kyle Vassell. In truth the scoreline reflected the split in dominance with Dundee very much the stronger of the two in the first half. Robby McCrorie was tested early on at Rugby Park but Dundee struggled to break the deadlock despite their dominance. Simon Murray had an opportunity to put his side ahead with an open goal in front of him but missed the ball completely. Derek McInnes’ men grew into the second half, Gary Mackay-Steven kept out by a strong Jon McCracken save and was guilty of skying a golden opportunity not long after. There will not be any panic just yet for McInnes but his side, currently sat tenth, have now won just one of their last six games. Attendance: 5, 454 Line-ups: Kilmarnock: R. McCrorie, R. Deas, L. Mayo, J. Wright, F. Murray (B. Wales, 78), C. Ndaba, B. Lyons, G. Mackay-Stevens (D. Armstrong 75′), B. Anderson (L. Polworth 78′), K. Vassell (I. Cameron 87′), M. Watkins Substitutes: D. Gloomy night in Dundee ends in defeat for hapless Hibs

Dundee 4 – 1 Hibernian Dundee took full advantage of a Hibs red to card to fire home four unanswered goals, piling further misery onto a hapless David Gray. Jordan Obita’s low cross was met by Nicky Cadden as the hosts began the game by far the better side. Their momentum was stopped dead in its tracks when Obita’s reckless challenge on Mohamed Sylla was met with a straight red. Dundee soon made their extra man count McGhee breezed into the box to finish Robertson’s cross. Hibernian’s series of unfortunate events continued to unfold before the manager’s eyes as Nectarios Triantis put the ball into his own net following a relatively tame Dundee corner. Not long after, a poor touch from Josef Bursik under little pressure allowed Seb Palmer-Holden to stretch the lead. The hosts piled further misery onto the Edinburgh side when Curtis Main grabbed a fourth in added time. Hibernian remain rooted at the foot of the table after yet another defeat.

Dons Surge Past Dundee with Dominant Second-Half Performance to Go Top of the Premiership

Aberdeen regained momentum in the Scottish Premiership, moving above Celtic after a powerful second-half display at Pittodrie, rebounding impressively from their League Cup semi-final setback against Dundee. Ante Palaversa opened the scoring with a composed finish, and just minutes later, Topi Keskinen doubled the lead, slipping the ball past Dundee goalkeeper Jon McCracken. Although Dundee fought back briefly, with Simon Murray heading home after an earlier missed penalty, Aberdeen quickly reasserted control. Substitute Vicente Besuijen, just seconds after coming on, latched onto Kevin Nisbet’s pass and restored Aberdeen’s two-goal cushion, with Nisbet himself adding a fourth via a deflected strike. Manager Jimmy Thelin praised his side’s character and composure, particularly in the strong opening of the second half. “We adjusted at half-time, focusing on staying calm,” he said. “I’m thrilled with the players’ response and the impact of our substitutes.” Dundee’s head coach Tony Docherty felt his side had been the better team in the first half and rued their missed chances and set-piece goals conceded. “It’s disappointing how we let those goals in,” Docherty commented. “Aberdeen didn’t have to do much to score, and we need to eliminate individual mistakes.” Despite a competitive first half and strong initial efforts from Dundee’s Oluweaseun Adewumi and Seb Palmer-Houldon, they couldn’t sustain the pressure or secure a first league victory at Pittodrie since 2004. Full time score Aberdeen 4-1 Dundee Attendance: 19,274
