Mark Wilson admitted he was bracing himself for the game potentially being abandoned due to adverse weather as Thistle ran out 3-0 winners at Firhill against Stenhousemuir.

Thistle were deserved winners on the day and could have found themselves out of sight within the first half hour as Stenhousemuir struggled to get out of their own half. Wilson said: “It could have been four or five at half time. I don’t want that kind of performance, that level to be overlooked.”

Thistle’s performance was in danger of being outshone by the terrible weather at Firhill. The game became far less free-flowing as the condition of the pitch worsened in the second half. At one point the referee had a conversation with both managers about potentially abandoning the match.

When asked about the game potentially being abandoned, Wilson said: “I think there was a stage there that I think we all thought, this is getting a wee bit silly now. It would have been a real sore one had it been called off because I thought we were exceptional and could have been well out of sight at half time.”

Euan Henderson was the star of the show on the day, netting his first hat-trick for Partick Thistle and putting in a great all-round display. Henderson linked up well with teammates Tony Watt and Sebastian Drozd and was a constant threat to the Stenhousemuir backline.

When discussing Henderson’s performance, Wilson said: “Oh, delighted, delighted for him. I think when you come to a new club you want to hit the heights right away. He scored a lot of goals last season in a different system. He’s just had to bide his time and he’s had an injury, so he’s had to play his way into the side, but for the last month now he’s been a really strong contributor.”

Thistle are now top of the Championship with a game in hand on second-placed Stenhousemuir. Thistle fans will be hoping that they can finally end their long wait for a return to the Premiership. Wilson said – “Like I said to the guys, when the opportunity comes to go top of the league, it doesn’t come around often. But if we’re going to be serious about our business here this season then you need to take the opportunity, especially at home.”

Partick Thistle will be hoping to continue their great start to the season as they host struggling Greenock Morton next on Saturday the 31st of October.
