Sixty years on from Lisbon: the Celtic watch made for the Lions

In May 2027, Celtic mark sixty years since eleven men from the streets around Glasgow became champions of Europe. Christophe Duchamp is marking the anniversary with a limited edition of exactly 1,967 watches.

Ask any Celtic supporter where it all began and the answer never changes. Lisbon, 25 May 1967. The Estádio Nacional, white marble in the Portuguese sun, and eleven men in green and white hoops walking out to face Inter Milan in the European Cup final.

Few outside Glasgow gave them a chance. Inter had won the trophy in 1964 and 1965, and Helenio Herrera’s side had turned shutting games down into an art form. When Sandro Mazzola scored from the penalty spot after seven minutes, the evening looked settled.

Celtic had other ideas.

What followed was one of the most sustained onslaughts ever seen in a European final. Celtic attacked in wave after wave, and Giuliano Sarti in the Inter goal made save after save. Just after the hour, Tommy Gemmell arrived on the edge of the box and drove the ball high into the net. With six minutes left, Stevie Chalmers turned in the winner. Celtic 2, Inter Milan 1. The first British club to become champions of Europe.

Thirty miles from Celtic Park

The scoreline is only half the story. The other half is who won it.

Jock Stein did not gather his side from across a continent. Every player was born within roughly 30 miles of Celtic Park. They were local men who grew up on the same streets and in the same towns as the supporters who paid to watch them. They went to Lisbon and beat the best team in Europe by playing the game the way those supporters wanted it played.

No club had won the European Cup like that before. None has done it since, and in the modern game it is hard to imagine anyone ever will.

That is why the name has lasted. The Lisbon Lions. It is why grandparents still tell the story to grandchildren born decades after the final whistle, and why one date sits at the heart of the club’s identity. May 2027 marks sixty years since that night in Portugal, and the story has lost none of its pull.

A watch made to be handed down

An anniversary like this deserves to be marked properly. Christophe Duchamp, the Swiss watch brand and Official Timepiece Supplier to Celtic FC, has created the club’s official Lisbon Lions limited edition: the Lisbon Lions Marine Chrono.

Only 1,967 will be made, a number every Celtic supporter will recognise. Each watch is individually numbered on the caseback, so no two are the same.

The design is unmistakably Celtic without shouting about it. A green sunburst dial sits inside a green bezel and carries the Lisbon Lions 60th Anniversary crest. It is a chronograph with date, driven by a Swiss movement and housed in a 42mm stainless steel case under sapphire crystal. Water resistant to 20 ATM (200m), it is made to be worn on matchdays, not kept in a drawer.

It comes on a stainless steel bracelet, and every pre-order includes a green rubber strap free of charge. The price is £299.

The Celtic Christmas gift that will still matter in 2067

Most presents are forgotten by February. This one carries something more. It is the kind of gift a father gives his son, or a daughter gives the dad who first took her to Celtic Park. It gets worn on matchdays, noticed by people who know, and one day passed down along with the story of Lisbon.

If you are looking for a Celtic Christmas gift with real meaning, timing matters. The first release of 500 watches is available to pre-order now, with delivery guaranteed before Christmas, and they are selling fast.

Once all 1,967 are gone, they are gone for good.

1,967 made. First 500 delivered before Christmas. Pre-order now and get the green strap free.
