Hearts suffered a second defeat in four days as Mohamed Salah scored and assisted in Trabzonspor’s 2-0 UEFA Conference League victory, despite a spirited response from Wouter Vrancken’s side.
Hearts were unable to build on their encouraging start in Turkey as Trabzonspor claimed all three points at Papara Park on Thursday night.
The Scottish side hit the post inside the opening seven minutes through Malachi Fagan-Walcott, but goals from Mohamed Salah and Franculino proved decisive as the hosts secured their second consecutive victory in the Conference League league phase.
The defeat followed Hearts’ damaging 7-1 loss to Celtic at the weekend, leaving the Edinburgh side with work to do as they look to get their European campaign back on track.
Hearts start brightly but Salah strikes from the spot
Hearts showed positive attacking intent from the opening whistle, with Christian Borchgrevink forcing André Onana into action before Fagan-Walcott came agonisingly close to giving the visitors the lead.
The defender rose highest to meet Calvin Miller’s corner, directing a powerful header against the post. Jamie McCart was unable to convert the rebound as Trabzonspor escaped an early scare.
Claudio Braga also threatened from a Miller free-kick, but his header was straight at Onana.
However, the visitors’ promising start was undone just after the half-hour mark. Tómas Magnússon brought down Franculino inside the penalty area, leaving the referee with little hesitation in pointing to the spot.
Salah stepped up and confidently converted the penalty in the 32nd minute, sending Beau Reus the wrong way to put the Turkish side ahead.
Hearts were left frustrated again shortly before the interval when Braga went down inside the opposition box, but their penalty appeal was turned down.
Franculino delivers a moment of quality
Hearts needed a strong response after the break, but Trabzonspor gradually tightened their grip on the contest.
Batista Mendy and Sidny Lopes Cabral both tried their luck from distance as the hosts looked to extend their advantage.
The decisive second goal arrived in the 58th minute following an excellent attacking move involving Franculino and Salah.
Franculino exchanged passes with Salah inside the box before collecting the return ball and curling a superb left-footed finish beyond Reus and into the far corner.
It was a clinical finish that underlined the difference between the sides in the decisive moments. Hearts had created opportunities early on, but Trabzonspor made theirs count.
Vrancken responded with a triple substitution in the 74th minute, introducing Sabah Kerjota, Josh McPake and JJ Williams in an attempt to inject fresh energy into the attack.
McPake fired wide as Hearts searched for a consolation, but the visitors struggled to find a way through a disciplined Trabzonspor defence.
The hosts were reduced to ten men in stoppage time when Lopes Cabral received a second yellow card. However, the dismissal came too late to change the outcome.
Injury concerns add to Hearts’ frustration
The result was compounded by further injury concerns for Vrancken.
Harry Milne was unavailable after suffering a suspected anterior cruciate ligament injury in training before the match, while Borchgrevink was forced off shortly before half-time and replaced by Stephen Kingsley.
Those setbacks added to the challenges facing Hearts after their heavy domestic defeat, with the manager having to contend with a disrupted squad during a demanding run of fixtures.
There were encouraging signs in the opening stages, particularly in the way Hearts created opportunities from set-pieces. However, their inability to convert those chances, combined with defensive lapses at crucial moments, ultimately proved costly.
What next for Hearts?
Hearts must now turn their attention back to domestic action, with Motherwell next on the schedule on Sunday.
The defeat leaves Hearts with one point from their opening two Conference League matches, following their opening draw, and highlights the importance of collecting results in their remaining fixtures.
While the performance represented a more competitive showing than the Celtic defeat, Vrancken will know his side need greater clinical edge in front of goal and more composure in key defensive situations.
Trabzonspor, meanwhile, made it two wins from two in the league phase, with Salah’s decisive contribution proving the difference on the night.
