Euan Henderson reveals how Storm Boelo left him fearing his hat-trick celebrations would be cut short, as torrential rain threatened to bring Partick Thistle’s 3-0 victory over Stenhousemuir to an early end.
The former Hearts youngster scored his first three goals of the season in the Championship yesterday, producing a first hat-trick for The Jags since Kris Doolan in 2015.
His terrific performance earned him an early escape from the torrential rain, as he was substituted in the 63rd minute.
However, Henderson revealed in his media duties after the game that he headed straight for the tunnel in hope the referee wasn’t going to call the match off. Such a decision would have ultimately cost himself his hat-trick but also deny Thistle earning a major three points.
He said: “I came off when it was really bad. It got to the point in the second half, where the right-hand side was nearly unplayable.
“I was getting nervous that the ref was going to call it off and then my hat-trick wouldn’t have counted. But thankfully he just kept playing.
“I think because it was already 3-0 and we played very well; we were comfortable in the game. The ref has made the correct decision just to see it out
“I was shaken; I was so nervous. I had to go down the tunnel, because it’s not often you score a hat-trick and if it was to be called off due to the bad weather, it would have been unlucky.”
Despite the threat of Storm Boelo bringing the match to an early conclusion, Henderson’s hat-trick proved decisively for The Jags and fires them into the top spot of the league standings.
Henderson will take confidence from opening his Championship account in such emphatic fashion, while himself and his teammates can look forward to another massive match next weekend against Greenock Morton.
