Jim Goodwin has confirmed that on-loan Dundee United winger has been subject to interest from Scotland under-21 boss Tony Docherty about representing the country of his parents.
Bennie, who is owned by QPR is currently on loan at Dundee United, where he scored his first goal two weeks ago in the 1-0 win against Hibernian. He also provided his first assist a match prior in a 3-0 win away to St. Mirren before the international break.
The 20-year-old, who was born in Hong Kong to Scottish parents is also eligible for Australia due to growing up in Perth. Bennie has previously represented Australia at under-17 & 20 level. However, he’s also previously spoken about his desires to play for Scotland.
Whilst at QPR last season, Bennie said: “I’ve always known and been really proud of my Scottish heritage.
“Growing up, everyone in my family was Scottish. Grandparents, cousins, uncles, mum and dad obviously, so we would always go back every summer and Christmas to see the grandparents and stay there for six weeks or thereabouts. It always feels like home when I’m there. Now it’s only an hour’s flight away, I’ve been back quite a few times during international breaks and when I get some time off.
“I’m sure the appropriate conversations will happen when the time is right but my plan is to let the football do the talking and hopefully that puts me in a good position for whoever and whatever comes along. I know some people might think I’m only interested [in Scotland] because of the World Cup but this is something I’ve had in my head for as long as I can remember. I discussed it with Lyndon Dykes in the short time we were together here at Queens Park Rangers, and he was also someone I really looked up to.”
When Jim Goodwin revealed contact from ex-Dundee boss Tony Docherty, he said: “I’ve had contact with Tony about Daniel, and I know they’re keeping close tabs on him.
“I think the only difference between the two nations is that Australia have the U23 team that will be going towards the Olympics. That might be a factor within what decision he makes.
“Coming to United has raised his profile and has put him on the radar of the Scottish FA, which is brilliant.”
The Irish manager also insisted that he’s not intending to sway Bennie one way or the other regarding his international allegiances.
Before Bennie makes any decision on the future of his international career, he alongside the rest of the Dundee United squad will prepare to host Aberdeen on Saturday in the Scottish Premiership.
