A former Premier League manager and player spoke to Rangers about potentially replacing Steven Gerrard after he departed the club in 2021.
Gerrard shockingly made the switch for Aston Villa after winning the Scottish Premiership the season before.
It was a move that didn’t work out for the Englishman as he was sacked after only 11 months in charge.
Giovanni Van Bronckhorst replaced the Liverpool legend and guided the Ibrox club to the Europa League final and to Scottish Cup success.
It could have been different as Gus Poyet exclusively revealed on the Off the Underside Podcast that he flirted with the chance to replace Gerrard at the Gers.
“There was a couple of times where I was close to going to Scotland.
“One [being] with Kilmarnock – not to play but to coach and the other one was after Steven Gerrard left Rangers.
“I didn’t negotiate but I had talks with them.”
Poyet’s last managerial job was in 2025 with South Korean side Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors winning the K-League and the Korea Cup.
The Uruguayan has managed in England where he won League One with Brighton in 2011, and kept Sunderland in the Premier League in 2014 with six games to go.
