Hibs Have a Recruitment Problem — and Reedijk Is Paying the Price

Hibernian boss Marink Reedijk claimed his team were “a thief of our own wallet” after Saturday’s 2-1 loss to Falkirk at Easter Road.

“I think we are a thief of our own wallet, I think we give away too easy goals, I think we dominated the game, I think we created a few good chances, I think we have to create even more chances.”

“If you dominate in this way, you can’t lose.”

The Easter Road club are now rooted to the bottom of the Scottish Premiership table, with Reedijk suffering consecutive defeats in his first two matches in charge.

Individual errors cost Hibs in the first half as Falkirk deservedly led by two goals before Owen Elding pulled one back moments before half-time.

Reedijk described those mistakes as a technical issue, believing decision-making in key moments could have been improved.

“ The first two shots on goal, from what I remember, maybe I don’t remember it correctly, go in.”

“Decision-making in the corner, I think you should be clinical there.”

Hibs were a goal behind at the break with many supporters making their feelings known at half-time.

A more dominant second-half display was produced but Reedijk’s side weren’t clinical enough in front of goal, ending the game with seventeen shots, only managing to get three of those on target.

Falkirk were content to sit back and defend their lead, making life difficult for Hibs. Reedijk acknowledged the difficulty in trying to break down a low block and hopes this can be prevented moving forward.

“Falkirk was in a low block for the majority of the match, and this is not easy to play against, but they can do it because they are in the match, and this is what we need to avoid.”

“Sometimes you need to clip it in behind, this variation we found better, and in order to clip it in behind you also need runners in behind.”

Despite failing to win his first appearance in the home dugout, Reedijk felt he had seen an improvement from last weekend’s defeat to Dundee United, but was left disappointed after tasting defeat again.

“But we need to keep our heads up high, we need to make sure that we keep on doing what we do and improve these things.”

“But I saw a better team today and I see progress.”

“I think if we do it like we played today and avoid these mistakes and make more of our chances, because I heard we had 20 shots, of which there are seven on goal, then there will be more shots on goal eventually and also eventually there will be no goals against.”

Reedijk understands the anger that is coming from the Hibs support, urging the supporters to “stay together” amid a tough run.

“I think that also here we need to stay together and that it is really important to stay together, because at the end of the day this will also help to lift us as a team.”

Up next for Hibs is a home match against Martin O’Neill’s Celtic at Easter Road next Sunday, with a 12pm kick-off.
