Manchester City have completed the signing of Enzo Fernandez from Chelsea on a five-year-deal. 

The fee is rumoured to be in the region of £124,000,000, a significant profit on the already nine-figure fee Chelsea spent to bring him to the club from Benfica three-and-a-half years ago.  In accumulative transfer fees, Fernandez is now the third most expensive footballer ever, behind Romelu Lukaku and Neymar.

It became clear that he wanted to leave the club this summer, but prior to forcing a move away from the club, Fernandez was a fan favourite at Chelsea, especially under current Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca, whom he’s reunited with.

Upon completing his move to Manchester, Fernandez said: “Manchester City are the most successful club in England in recent times.

“Every player wants to be part of a club like this because everyone knows how well-run City are.

“I could not be happier to be here, and I am ready for the challenge of helping City continue winning trophies. This is a club built for success.

“If you look across the squad, City have quality in every area. I want to learn from my new teammates and become a better player.

“I pride myself on continually improving my game. Anyone who’s worked with me will know how hard I train every single day and how much I put into matches. I give absolutely everything and I can promise Manchester City that will continue now I’m here. ”

Fernandez joined Chelsea in January 2023 on the back of winning the World Cup with Argentina. He played 170 games for the West London club, scoring 31 goals in that time frame. The midfielder won the Conference League and Club World Cup whilst at Chelsea.

The former Chelsea midfielder could make his Manchester City debut on Saturday, where they host ex-Chelsea and Manchester City midfielder Frank Lampard’s Coventry City side.
