Scottish Premiership Preview - GW8

A busy weekend awaits as Premiership football returns once again, with some tasty ties coming up.

Aberdeen v St Mirren

Aberdeen host an out-of-form St Mirren side who have conceded eight goals in their last 2 matches, with most recently a 5-0 battering at Tynecastle. Stephen Robinson, who faces his former side, hasn’t been at their best of late either, most recently a 1-0 defeat at home to St Johnstone, after many fans believed the Dons were turning a corner after an impressive week prior to the International break. The last time the sides met was back last season, where the Buddies left Pittodrie with a 2-0 victory.

Hibernian v Falkirk

Marink Reedijk makes his home debut in front of the Easter Road crowd, which will be without their ultras section, Block 7, following a three-match ban. Hibs are winless in their last five outings, with most recently a 1-0 defeat to Dundee United, with the Hibees sitting 10th, just one point ahead of the Bairns. Falkirk themselves have had a poor season, as they sit in that relegation zone with just one win in eight, which came against Hearts. Last time out, John McGlynn’s side lost out 2-1 to Dundee, courtesy of an Ashley Hay last-minute goal to seal defeat. Hibs won the last meeting between the sides, a 3-1 win at the Falkirk Stadium in May.

Kilmarnock v Motherwell

Both sides have, again, had a pretty poor season. Killie sit rock bottom on just 5 points, with just one win all season, which came against Hibs at Easter Road. Their last win at home came back in the League Cup, with a 3-2 win over local rivals, Ayr United. Motherwell, who had an outstanding season last campaign, playing some of the best football in the league, currently find themselves in the bottom six after a disappointing start to their season. The Steelmen have lost all of their last 4 games, scoring one while conceding nine goals. Motherwell haven’t won at Rugby Park since 2021, with the last meeting being a 4-0 win at Fir Park for Motherwell last season.

St Johnstone v Dundee United

St Johnstone come into this one following an impressive 1-0 victory at Pittodrie on Sunday and are having quite the return from the Championship, sitting in 5th place and looking a real threat under Simo Valakari, as they welcome Dundee United, who are also looking quite good themselves, as they defeated Hibernian last time out with a 1-0 win at Tannadice. St Johnstone have only lost once in 13 home fixtures, which was a narrow 1-0 defeat to Celtic. Dundee United have been impressive on the road this season, beating Killie 4-0 and St Mirren 3-0 away from home. The last competitive meeting was back in 2024, which ended in a 1-1 draw in Perth.

Dundee v Rangers

The late kick-off in Dundee, as Rangers make the visit to Dens. Dundee have had a good start to the season, with Steven Pressley’s side sitting fourth in the league, three points off of third-placed Hearts. Dundee have won their last two matches against both Motherwell and Falkirk and will look to stun Rangers. For the Ibrox side, they have won all of their last seven matches, being the most in-form side at the moment. In that run, that has included two wins over Celtic. During the seven-game period, Derek McInnes’ side have conceded just two goals, scoring 12 goals. The last meeting was back in January, a 3-0 win for the Glasgow outfit.

Celtic v Hearts

Certainly the game of the week, as the Champions and runners-up from last campaign collide in Glasgow. We all know what happened that day, as Hearts were one step away from the title, but Celtic clawed back to snatch the title off of the Jambos. Celtic this season have had a solid start in the league, but outside of league business, it’s been rather disappointing. They have only lost once in the league, which was quite disappointing, with Rangers running away 1-0 winners. Hearts, however, they’ve had a decent start. Opening day defeat at Pittodrie and defeat before the International break at Falkirk; apart from that, they’ve looked pretty solid, with most recently a 5-0 home win over St Mirren. The last time these two sides met was, of course, the title decider at the end of last season, where Celtic snatched the title at the very end to put an end to the Hearts’ dream.
