Rangers midfield duo head out on loan
Middlesbrough have confirmed the loan signing of Connor Barron, whilst Lyall Cameron has joined Dundee United for the season. Barron has played 85 times for the Ibrox side since joining from Aberdeen two years ago, but has struggled for game time in the last 6 months due to injuries. With new manager Derek McInnes bolstering his midfield with the arrivals of Dan Neil, Cammy Devlin and Vanja Dragojević, the Scotland international was told he was free to play elsewhere and Kim Hellberg swooped in just before the end of the English transfer window to bring the midfielder to the Riverside. The championship side next face a trip to Burnley whilst Rangers will play away to Falkirk. Lyall Cameron joined the club on a free transfer from Dundee last season, but has struggled for game time in Govan, spending the second half of last season on loan at Aberdeen. He’s now crossed the Dens Road divide, agreeing to join Jim Goodwin’s side on a season long loan. Dundee United travel to Motherwell tomorrow, where Cameron could make his debut in Tangerine.
Allan McGregor returns to Rangers
Rangers have officially announced the arrival of Allan McGregor as the club’s new goalkeeping coach. McGregor returns to the club, in which he spent two spells as a player at, winning four league titles in the progress. He was also a part of Barry Ferguson’s interim staff at the tail end of the 2024/25 season but now joins the club on a fulltime basis as new manager Derek McInnes adds to his backroom staff. He is widely regarded as one of the best goalkeepers in the club’s history and was awarded Hall of Fame status in 2023 alongside recently departed James Tavernier. The former Scotland international replaces Sal Bibbo, who was brought to the club by Russell Martin last year. Bibbo left his post to join newly promoted Premier League side Coventry City under Frank Lampard. Rangers confirmed the signing of goalkeeper Ivor Pandur from Hull City last week, with Jack Butland going the other way. Liam Kelly also signed a contract extension until 2028 last month. McGregor said: “Everyone knows what this club means to me, so to have the opportunity to return and help the club in the present and future is a real privilege. “Rangers is a club that demands the very highest standards, and I’m looking forward to getting started, working with the players and staff, and seeing what we can achieve together in this next chapter.” “Allan is a fantastic addition to our coaching staff and brings with him a wealth of experience,” McInnes said. “He knows exactly what it takes to be successful at Rangers and understands the standards that are required every day. “His knowledge, expertise and winning mentality will be a huge asset to the group, and I am looking forward to working closely with him as we continue our preparations for the season ahead.”
Andreas Skov Olsen signs for Rangers
Rangers have officially announced the signing of Andreas Skov Olsen on a six month loan deal from VfL Wolfsburg. They also have an option to buy the player for a reported amount of almost £9m. Rangers were first linked to the Danish international back in the summer of 2020, before their unbeaten league season, with manager Steven Gerrard being a keen admirer of the Dane. The club once again expressed interest in Skov Olsen two years later under Giovanni Van Bronckhorst, but the winger instead opted for a move elsewhere as he joined Club Brugge. Following a successful three years in Belgium, in which he scored almost 50 goals, Olsen signed for Wolfsburg last January, however injuries prevented the 26-year-old from making his mark in the Bundesliga. With the player showing a keen interest in making the switch to Glasgow, the arrival of Skov Olsen is seen as a statement signing for the Ibrox club, as Danny Röhl looks to add reinforcements to his squad following the acquisitions of midfielder Tochi Chukwuani from Sturm Graz for £4million and left back Tuur Rommens in a £3million deal from Westerlo. Röhl said regarding the signing: “We are really excited to bring Andreas to the club. He is a player who has proven himself at the top level and brings experience of performing under pressure both domestically and on the European stage. He will provide real quality in the final third of the pitch and arrives hungry for this challenge and excited by the opportunity ahead of him.” Rangers will be hoping to build momentum in 2026 as they focus their efforts on chasing down the league title in what is expected to be a tense battle with rivals Celtic and league leaders Hearts.
