Jota is set to take a major step towards his long-awaited Celtic comeback today when he features in a behind-closed-doors bounce game against Falkirk at Lennoxtown.

The Portuguese winger has been out of action for around 18 months after suffering an ACL injury during Celtic’s 5-0 victory over Dundee United in April 2025. What was initially expected to be a period of rehabilitation has turned into a lengthy absence, with setbacks delaying his return to first-team football.

The 27-year-old has gradually increased his involvement in training in recent weeks and has already taken part in small-sided games as Celtic carefully manage his recovery.

Today’s fixture against Falkirk will provide Jota with his first opportunity to test himself in a more competitive match environment since suffering the injury. While the game is being used primarily as part of his rehabilitation, it represents an important milestone in his recovery.

Celtic are understood to be hopeful that Jota can return to competitive action in the coming weeks, although his progress will continue to be assessed following such a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

The winger’s return would provide Martin O’Neill with another attacking option, but the immediate priority will be getting Jota through today’s game without any problems and continuing to build his fitness and confidence.

For a player who has spent so long watching from the sidelines, simply pulling on the Celtic shirt again will be a significant moment.

After 18 months away, Jota’s road back to the Celtic first team is finally entering its next chapter.
