Wouter Vrancken’s Heart of Midlothian side begin their UEFA Conference League journey tomorrow night at Tynecastle. Despite earning Champions League football, the Gorgie side were knocked out before the giants of Real Madrid or Bayern Munich got the chance to visit.
Instead, they welcome Danish side FC Nordsjælland who travel north west to kick off their league phase campaign in Edinburgh, but who are they, and who should Hearts look out for on Thursday evening?
A Brief History
Founded in 1991, the club initially took the name Farum Boldklub after a merger took place between Farum IK and Stavnsholt BK; the two clubs in the town. Twelve years later, they were renamed FC Nordsjælland after an ownership change, in order to expand the club’s appeal across the North Zealand region from which its name translates, rather than just the town of Farum itself.
Since then, FCN have grown to become a mainstay in the Danish Superliga, even picking up a league title in the 2011/12 season against usual powerhouses FC Copenhagen and FC Midtjylland. They can also boast back to back Danish Cup victories within their relatively young trophy cabinet.
The Tigers have played out seven European campaigns in their short history, including a season in the Champions League. Playing group stage matches against Chelsea and Juventus in the past, they even managed to earn a 1-1 draw at home to the latter. The last time they featured in European competition was in the 2023/24 season, where they narrowly missed out on qualification into the knockout rounds of the Conference League despite a positive campaign.
How They Got To Tynecastle
Despite finishing the regular season in 6th, FC Nordsjælland qualified for the second qualifying round of the Conference League after putting together a run of just one loss in their ten championship round games (a system not dissimilar to the split in Scotland) to end up 3rd by the conclusion of the 2025/26 campaign.
In qualification, FCN actually lost their first game against Swedes GAIS, but came back to thump them 6-0 in the second leg. They then put seven past Icelandic side Valur across two legs without reply, before beating Swiss Super League runners-up FC St Gallen to advance to the league phase, where they hope to open their account with a result against Hearts.
The Formbook
The Farum club made an excellent start to the season, embarking on four wins and a draw in their opening five league games. However, FCN arrive in Edinburgh in the midst of a rocky spell. They’ve only recorded one win in their last five now, including a defeat to Copenhagen and a draw against Midtjylland, which has seen them lose touch to both at the top of the table.
A heavy 4-1 defeat to Viborg before the international break and a goalless draw at home to Odense Boldklub on Friday night mean they now sit in 4th, six points behind the league leaders. This should offer Wouter Vrancken some encouragement to take the game to the Danes, who look to be on the ropes after a difficult September which is yet to improve.
Players To Watch
The top scorer for the Tigers last season was nineteen year old Ghanaian midfielder Prince Amoako Junior, who broke into their first team at the beginning of the campaign and went on to score nine goals.
It has been fellow youngster Hjalte Boe who has started the season brightly this time around. He has netted six times in all competitions so far from right wing, clearly a bright young player to keep an eye on.
FC Nordsjælland have also brought back former centre back Victor Nelsson on loan from Galatasaray, where he’s built up his European pedigree alongside a stint at Italian winners of this competition, AS Roma.
Another interesting arrival to Tynecastle tomorrow night will be that of former Chelsea and Real Madrid midfielder Michael Essien, who is part of the coaching setup in Farum, led by manager Jens Fønsskov Olsen.
Hearts kick off their UEFA Conference League campaign tomorrow night at 20.00, in what is set up to be a real tester for Wouter Vranckens side. FC Nordsjælland have enough European experience to handle the occasion, but are full of young players who need to rise to the occasion in order to come away with anything at Tynecastle.
