Calvin Miller
Twenty goal involvements last season for Falkirk earned him a move to Heart of Midlothian, following back-to-back league titles in League One and the Championship. The 28-year-old has made a brilliant start at his new club, chipping in with four goals in his opening 13 matches alongside strong performances domestically and in Europe. As a result, many expected the left winger to join teammates James Wilson and Josh McPake in Pocognoli’s plans.
While the opportunity didn’t come this time, continued strong form in Wouter Vrancken’s dynamic Hearts side could earn him a future call-up.
James Penrice
Since joining his boyhood club on a summer loan deal from AEK Athens, James Penrice has hit the ground running for Rangers. He made an immediate impact on his debut with a goal and an assist against St Mirren in the League Cup, before playing a starring role in a dominant 3-0 victory over Celtic at Ibrox.
Scotland have long enjoyed strong depth at left-back, with stalwarts Andy Robertson and Kieran Tierney regular fixtures throughout Steve Clarke’s tenure. At the same time, Sassuolo’s Josh Doig has also been handed a spot in the national side. However, if Penrice continues to play such a pivotal role in Rangers’ campaign, he will certainly make a compelling case for an international call-up.
Josh Mulligan
The Hibees have endured a mixed start to their campaign. After crashing out of Europe to Gent in the final minutes and losing the opening Edinburgh Derby against Hearts, reaching the semi-finals of the League Cup has provided some much-needed cheer.
One clear bright spot remains Josh Mulligan. His powerful runs, athletic profile, and high-energy style continue to make him one of David Gray’s best assets, and the midfielder will soon earn a Scotland call-up if his current form holds.
Sébastien Pocognoli opted for experience in his initial midfield selection, keeping faith in John McGinn, Kenny McLean, Billy Gilmour, Lewis Ferguson, and Ryan Christie, alongside the pending return of Scott McTominay. However, Mulligan’s dynamism and raw athleticism could prove a valuable alternative for Pocognoli moving forward.
