Rangers defender Olwethu Makhanya and Manager Derek McInnes have been named Scottish Premiership Player and Manager of the Month for September following an outstanding run of form for the Ibrox side.
A perfect month of five consecutive victories, capped by a commanding 3-0 League Cup quarter-final win over Celtic to secure a place in the semi-finals, has transformed Rangers’ fortunes after a disappointing start to both their domestic and European campaigns.
McInnes guided his side to important league victories over Falkirk, Motherwell, St Mirren and Celtic at Parkhead, reducing the gap at the top of the table to just two points.
Makhanya, who joined the club from Philadelphia Union during the summer, has made an immediate impact in Glasgow. The South African has started all five matches during the award period and played a key role in Rangers recording four consecutive clean sheets alongside central defensive partner Emmanuel Fernandez.
McInnes was delighted to receive the award and praised the collective efforts behind the team’s recent success as Rangers prepare to return to league action this weekend.
“It’s pleasing to receive this award, but it is recognition of the collective effort of the players and staff,” said McInnes.
“I am fortunate to have a dedicated group of staff around me who work tirelessly every day.
“We had a fantastic run of results before the international break and the players deserve great credit for their efforts too. We want to keep building on that and are looking forward to returning to Scottish Premiership action this weekend.”
Makhanya, who recently featured three times for South Africa during the international break, also paid tribute to his team-mates and the support staff.
“I’d like to thank my team-mates and all the staff for their support.
“They have helped me settle in and feel part of the group and that makes a big difference when you come to a new club.
“I want to keep working hard, keep improving and help the team get the results we want.”
Despite suffering an early exit from UEFA Conference League qualifying at the hands of Jablonec, Rangers have responded impressively in recent weeks and now could move to the top of the Scottish Premiership when they face Kilmarnock on Saturday.
