Nathan Patterson believes Scotland are showing positive signs under Sebastien Pocognoli, despite a difficult night against Switzerland at Hampden and no goals scored in their opening two matches.

A convincing 3-0 defeat was compounded by Jack Hendry’s 11th-minute red card, but the Torino defender reckons the national side are on the right track with Pocognoli at the helm.

“We knew it was going to be a tough task as soon as we went down to 10 men, but we still showed glimpses of what we’re trying to do and the ideas that we’ve got,” Patterson said.

“It’s been good [working with the new head coach]. Everyone’s buying into the process, and you can see the ideas. Obviously, there was disappointment in the dressing room because we couldn’t really stick to the game plan he had in mind.”

It has been a summer of change for Patterson after leaving Everton to join Serie A outfit Torino for an undisclosed fee on deadline day. The 24-year-old left his boyhood club Rangers for a reported £12 million in 2022, but an injury-hit tenure yielded 68 appearances across four seasons.

Since moving to Italy, he has featured twice, coming off the bench to help seal a 2-1 comeback victory over Fiorentina before a 1-1 draw away to Bologna. With plenty of change in his club and international career, Patterson is embracing the new challenges.
