Most of the attention has been on the Premiership this weekend, but teams further down the pyramid have had Scottish Cup business to attend to.
Bo’ness United 2-1 Forfar
The first shock of the afternoon came at the hands of Lowland League side Bo’ness United. The hosts showed great character to come from behind and stun League Two side Forfar, with goals from Kieran Mitchell and a late penalty from Jamie Allen securing the win.
Bonnyton Thistle 0-3 Clachnacuddin
The Inverness-based side came away with victory in Ayrshire. Bonnyton made history by reaching the second round for the first time ever, but it proved to be a step too far as the Highland League side progressed to the next round.
Brechin City 2-2 Strathspey Thistle (Brechin City win on penalties)
It was a tough afternoon at the Hedge as Lowland League side Brechin City edged past Highland League opponents Strathspey Thistle. The visitors took an early lead, but a Curtis Main penalty secured the equaliser. Josh Race fired the visitors back in front before Corey Kirk levelled the score once more on the hour mark. It was a heartbreaking afternoon for Strathspey, but Brechin progressed on penalties.
Brora Rangers 3-1 Cowdenbeath
Brora once again put on a brilliant show as they cruised to victory. It was a relatively quiet affair for much of the match, but things sparked into life in the dying stages. Cowdenbeath took the lead in the 86th minute, but a 93rd-minute equaliser forced an additional 30 minutes. Brora then showed their quality to secure a place in the next round.
Clydebank 2-1 Tranent
Derby victories don’t come much better than this in the Scottish Cup, as Clydebank scraped past Tranent yesterday afternoon. The hosts were leading 2-0, but a 73rd-minute goal from Euan Greig wasn’t enough to give Tranent a way back into the match.
Dumbarton 1-0 Keith
It was a defeat for Keith, but they will certainly take positives from a performance that gave League One side Dumbarton a very tricky afternoon. With Danny Lennon in the dugout for Dumbarton, the only goal of the game came in the 72nd minute, with Leighton McIntosh securing his side a place in the third round.
Dunipace 1-5 Largs Thistle
A monumental away win for Largs Thistle saw them book their place in the next round with a five-star performance. It was always going to be a tough place to visit, but Largs coped relatively well, securing a deserved place in the third round for the first time in the club’s history.
Edinburgh City 4-1 Kelty Hearts
There was delight in the capital as Edinburgh City fired four goals past Kelty Hearts in an all-League Two clash. The match was relatively even on the statistics, but the visitors couldn’t translate their efforts into goals, managing just one from 14 attempts. Edinburgh City, meanwhile, made the most of their opportunities, scoring four times from just seven shots on target. It was a thoroughly deserved win for the capital side.
Gretna 2008 0-3 Cumnock
This will be only the second time Cumnock have reached the third round, with their previous appearance coming in 2023, when they eventually lost to Turriff United. On the day, it was a deserved victory for the visitors, with the hosts failing to register a single shot over the 90 minutes. Cumnock were firmly in control throughout and deservedly progressed.
Huntly 2-2 Annan (Annan win on penalties)
It was a tough day at the office for Annan, with the wind playing a part in their struggles in Aberdeenshire. Huntly were exceptional throughout, setting up a very exciting tie, but lacked composure during the penalty shootout. Annan, meanwhile, converted all their penalties to secure progression to the next round.
Lochee United 1-2 The Spartans
The Spartans avoided a potential cup upset in Dundee as they scraped past Lowland League side Lochee United. The weather, as we all know, was atrocious, with torrential rain and strong winds battering Dundee, while the pitch offered little help.
Marc McNulty gave his side an early lead before the hosts fought back through Finlay Allan. However, a penalty just before half-time, converted by McNulty, secured The Spartans’ place in the third round.
Renfrew 2-1 Stirling Albion
Possibly the shock of the round as the League Two side exit at the hands of the West of Scotland Premier League side. This will be their first time in Round Three since 1877 after stunning Stirling Albion thanks to goals from Aedan Gilfedder and Sean Fyfe.
Stranraer 3-1 Tayport
Just like many of the other ties, the weather was torrential, but it took Tayport only two minutes to find the back of the net, with Dale Reid firing his side ahead. From then on, however, it was a dominant display from the League Two side, who went on to score three goals and put the junior side away.
Troon 4-3 Caledonian Braves
Despite the weather, an incredible game of football saw Troon emerge victorious after extra time. Caledonian Braves led at half-time, but Troon did exceptionally well to fight their way back into the contest before finishing the job in the additional 30 minutes.
University of Stirling 1-2 Elgin City
Elgin City fought hard to book their place in the next round, with goals from Kane Hester and Oliver Colloty sending the League Two side through. The Lowland League side pulled one back late on through Finn Regan, but his goal wasn’t enough to prevent Elgin from securing their place in the next round.
⸻
There are still several ties to be played, with some falling victim to Storm Boelo. The Friday-night clash between Penicuik Athletic and Clyde was postponed, alongside Johnstone Burgh vs Fortmartine United, Hill of Beath Hawthorn vs Musselburgh Athletic, Threave Rovers vs Pollok and Cumbernauld Colts vs Banks O’Dee.
The draw for the next round will take place this evening at 6 pm, with League One and Championship sides entering the competition. The draw will be conducted by Falkirk goalkeeper Scott Bain.
